Another VAR farce in Bayern game

Lewandowski brought down in box clear foul ref blows and he told to place ball on spot ready to take pen then ref blows and gives offside so pen is cancelled following var check.

No one had a clue what’s going on.

I'll say it again & again, it's the worst thing to be brought in to football, it won't be binned & will continue to cause contraversy, season after season

I suppose it was only a farce on this occasion if he wasn't offside. If he was offside then it's an example of VAR doing its job correctly.
(I haven't seen it BTW)

i hate VAR and want it scrapped forthwith but I saw the incident and the ref did what he had to do. Awarded the penalty but Lewandowki was well offside (debateable whether he was intefering) so it did the job.

To be fair there will be controversy with or without it.

How many times in the past, when we have seen refs make blatant errors, have we thought 'If we had VAR then we would have had the correct decision' - the answer is many, many times, which is why it was brought in, and believe it or not it has been right the vast majority of times.

The problem arises when a) it gets it wrong b) it's mis-used and c) it's 'too fussy' eg a fingernail over the line gives offside

My opinion for c) is for the ref to have some discretion, just like he has discretion as to how much physical contact constitutes a foul

As for a & b they will become minimised as the operators get more experienced

They are using it differently in Holland and allowing a 10cm margin of error. This is against FIFA's wishes but as they effectively invented the system in the first place they are turning a blind eye to it.
If it is successful they will no doubt adopt it everywhere and claim it was their idea.

That’s what you need, some Lee way to
Interpret the outcome in a sensible coherent manner not follow it religiously as in 2mm of his left fore arm is offside from this still image so no goal.

Ruins the game completely. I'd far rather we just lived with the ref's mistakes than have to stand around for 5 minutes while they watch umpteen slo-mos.
Couldn't agree more, when football was once instant, now wait 5 minutes before celebrating

It's really easy to do in the instance of offside.

If you need to zoom in on the picture and it isn't obvious from the full sized still image then the benefit goes to the attacker and he's onside.

The farcical scenario is where they're zooming in and debating about whether 2 pixels show he was off.

It’s also inaccurate, which is the most important thing.

They are pretending that it’s possible to measure a 3D dynamic situation using 2D camera technology from an angle to within that level of accuracy. It isn’t, it’s an estimate.

Crazy & not needed

Silly & they call that improving the game :cautious:

Lewendowski wasn't going to pass to the lad who was eventually flagged offside and he wasn't interfering where he was so while it might technically be right it is a convoluted process to get to that decision.
Let's go back to those simple days where defenders could step out in a line and catch you offside and attackers knew they had to get back onside before they ball was played forward.
I'm sure the glut of goals in top flight football is as much to do with great attacking as it is with lazy defending where they know the technology might rescue them on a technicality.
