Another Nail In The Coffin For Democracy

There's all sorts going on that people don't seem to care about. Brexit was just the start of it. By the time the country wakes up it'll be too late. Some of the changes that the Johnson puppet government want to make on behalf of a select few might change things for generations.
exactly. I would argue that it started way before Brexit, even as far back with the Blair back door privatisation within the NHS

The UK already does not have a well functioning free press, the above legislation will make it much worse

The English electorate failed to understand the choice at the 2019 election was between a genuinely progressive social democracy like most of the rest of NW Europe vs, a more repressive version of the regressive US system (ever widening inequality, no welfare, no public funded health system)

I dreamt last night the Army marched into downing Street and removed this rabble for the clear and present danger they are causing to it's population and democracy...Woke with a smile on my face.... honest!!!!!

I dated an ex Colonels daughter for four years. He worked in Whitehall. The army play a significant role in how this country is run.

i would say it started with Thatcher nicking my Milk.

proceeded to selling off council houses, the gas, the water, the electricity, the telephones.

attempts to smash organised labour in the car plants, the steelworks and the mines.

and the commencement of jingo-istic wars for election purposes.

calling for a 'back to basics' policy whilst all the time hiding deviants, paedo's, adulterers, pimps & liars from prosecution, again for electoral purposes.

Didn't sell off council houses, but persuaded those who were renting (council house occupiers) that you could live the english dream and have your own castle. The start of privatisation?

Bot sure if it was right or wrong, it got a lot of people onto the ladder, but also encouraged private ownership.

The right to buy is one of the biggest cons of neoliberalism. It directly transferred decent social housing into the hands of a select few private landlords. It's absolutely shocking how houses that were once owned by Local Authorities for the benefit of people are now costing LA's money through Housing Benefit payments (for the least well off).

The Thatcher government sold the lie of owning your own home knowing within a generation those homes would be owned by wealthy individuals charging rent to those who need Social Housing.

Selling off council houses wasn’t aimed at people on Teesside it was aimed at houses in London particularly in and around Westminster, pay ten grand for it, toff offers you a hundred, job done.👍

On the button.

A good argument above and then this nonsense. One thing about Thatcher is that she had a belief and stood by it. Not my beliefs but to say she sold millions of houses to make a few Bob is daft.

One would argue we’re going the way of Russia. Speak out and be punished

The idea was to sell the dream to social renters of being able to own their own home at a significant reduction in market value, whilst the money raised from sales by councils was then used as a weapon by Central Government to bring about a reduction in its own financial input and force councils to reinvest this money in local services and cut its reliance on central government funding. Reinvestment was strictly controlled by Central Government, the Housing Association movement was the preferred mechanism and funds could be used to encourage low cost development through the provision of council owned land to be sold for next to nothing to enable H.A’s to build so called affordable housing.

Some areas moved to combat this by freeing their own housing departments to form as new, separate housing companies, often charitable ones, transferring the housing stock often very cheaply allowed many councils with poorly maintained stock to be able to be refurbished with new kitchens, bathrooms central heating and double glazing. This was the selling point for tenants to agree as they would still have the right to buy and new tenants thereafter would not thereby putting a handbrake of sorts on stock loss.

In the early days of the right to buy many unscrupulous companies were offering loans with hidden terms persuading tenants it was easy money pointing out the equity immediately as a benefit, they wouldn’t have to answer to landlords and they’d be in clover. The problem was interest rates were rising and the troubles if peoples jobs were lost etc forced many a tenant to lose their homes as often people did not have rainy day funds to weather such storms and some of these loan companies were ruthless in evictions. The dream for many was never realistic and accessing affordable housing is now a nightmare.

I had no issue with the idea, the problem was in not ensuring existing tenants could genuinely afford to buy and knew the consequences if they got into difficulty and that when sold every penny councils received should have gone into replacing the stock on a like for like number and building more new ones over the long term. The Government specifically stopped local authorities from doing this and pushed for Large Scale Voluntary transfers of stock and setting up their own registered providers as councils could not maintain stock satisfactorily and keep rents low, affordable and secure. These kind of proposals are being relentlessly pushed by all governments and institutions on a regular basis - certainly using the guise of "tolerance" ,"compassion" "emptathy" and that by now worn out trope "political correctness" or other low level cudlly wuddly words.

I do remember the EU engaging in such shenanigans - I think after being caught in mass corruption - you know, the turn up for one day sign in ( salary/expenses)and jet home malarky - the Galvin Report and other such items - leading to terrible proposals such as — European Framework National Statute for the Promotion of Tolerance, Article 4 -"There is no need to be tolerant to the intolerant" - which seeks to force the national governments of all 28 EU member states to establish “special administrative units” to monitor any individual or group expressing views that the EU deem to be “intolerant” -scary reading.

The Scots passing their Hate Law legislation would be another example - people being snitched in their own living rooms? Or the now repealed Bigot Law.
‘I need to check your thinking’ episode.
Not to mention the complete waste of recording 120,000 NON crime hate incidents by the police - repeat - NON crime!! Why are the Police involved in a NON crime? Where end up with ‘I need to check your thinking’ . Mmmmm

I watched video ( subtitled ) where an American was watching Football Fan in UK singing bawdy, extremely rude and sweary songs and chants - the upshot was he was shocked that we had the freedom to let loose at the ref and opposing fans.
I'm now thinking those days are coming to an end - with the move away from it being a working class moment of 90 minutes break from the drudge - to an expensive middle and upper class - file in and be polite, no offending anyone - "Thank you for attending Fluffy Bunnies UTD and have a superduper safe journey home".

Even more recently , White House mouthpiece Jen Psaki said the government was coordinating with Big Tech on correcting "misinformation." This really is censorship. One moment Wuhan is a conspiracy ,and all mentions would be censored - now when convenient, it isn't. UP is DOWN.

The upshot is they do not like scrutiny of any kind - things appear to happening in at an accelerated rate. They have used words ( even completely made up words!) and division to sow the seeds of murkiness, where we are now losing the ability to see what is genuine and what is tripe.
We appear to be in a very weird cultish moment in the Western World - whereas there was a moment in time when the internet was seen as a force for good - it is now turning into something far more nefarious.

Freedom of Speech is so incredibly important - and some appear ready to throw what is left away.

I don't know about censorship. Dangerous idiots putting out nonsense that kills should be imprisoned.
