Johnson says we must pay higher bills as it is the cost of supporting Ukraine against the evils of Putin.

Poll is anonymous - be interesting to get a snapshot of what people are thinking.

If pressure was put directly onto the big oil and gas companies from all governments to not only return but to undercut the pre invasion oil and gas prices the funding of the war from Russia would to strangled off so all energy companies as far as I am concerned have blood on their hands
Governments and big companies are not acting in the best interests of humanity they are prioritising money over life I find that sickening

I hope the KGB don’t monitor this sight. It’s embarrassing that some people in this country appear to be getting ready to sell Ukraine out to the 21st century biggest Imperialist.
Unusual take on the comments so far, or are you just basing that on the poll?

The poll itself is pretty meaningless for the reasons most have given.

Of those who've commented I'd say the vast majority (if not all) absolutely support Ukraine and are happy for the government to use taxpayer money to do so.

No-one is falling for Johnson's lie though that the only way to do this is for individuals to pay higher energy bills.

I see the increased cost as more of a penalty against decades of our own bad planning, in relation to energy independence, and red tape preventing renewable schemes which could have greatly lessened the impact. We should have been quicker with this, even just for the green aspects, but now we're paying for the same mistake in a different way.

It's certainly not Ukraine's fault, so they should not be paying the ultimate price, for other failures. It's our own fault, as well as others reliant on oil and gas, along with Putin's of course. Then a cost of this can also be attributed to the lessening of demand during covid, which then of course will lead to increased demand after (which increases prices).

It was always inevitable that we would have an issue at some point, with Gas and Oil, or both (which jacks up electricity cost too), as generally, we get them from some pretty dodgy places. We're like drug addicts now, and we've got to get off it at some point.

The penalty doesn't need to fall onto the poor though, we have other mechanisms where this could quite easily be covered by taking/ taxing from those companies profiting from it, or taxing those individuals who won't even notice the cost increase.

I don't mind paying the increased rates if we learn from this mistake and actually do something about it, but don't confuse that with me thinking the poorest should have to pay £300-£500 a month, as they certainly shouldn't, and certainly can't.

If we cut demand, the price will come down, and everyone can cut their demand quite significantly, probably without much hardship and this will lessen the monthly cost. The Tories aren't even mentioning this though, as their entire political campaign is in the shitter. The whole EU is taking measures to cut demand, why aren't we doing our bit?

Putin's whole strategy relies on the EU buckling over winter, when it really doesn't have to. It's not going to be great far from it, but we should be able to ensure everyone can get through it, and then Putin will pretty much have to give in.

Don't let the bully win, it won't stop him from bullying, and he'll likely keep upping the ante.

If people go cold, it won't be because of Putin, it will be because we've not redistributed wealth adequately or helped those most in need enough, and we all know who is to blame for that.

I agree largely with this but I believe you would also need to get the brokers/traders involved. The majority of gas supply contracts go through these exchanges. If G8 finance and energy ministers approached the gas providers directly they would just attempt to throw a smokescreen and say we don't actually have much to do with setting the daily prices. That's prob true. A month after the war the wholesale price settled back to 100 ( it's now just gone over 300 ish) and for 3 whole months was quite static and even went down to 85 just before the chaos started on 13th Jun (Nord 1 Germany pipeline flow decrease and maintenance shut off) That chaos is all to do with fears and what the brokers build into the price in a mechanism called risk analysis which is basically all to do with their own made up fears about future supply The fact is there seems plenty of supply of natural gas through non Russian means but yes there has to be a period of adapting but each northern hemisphere country that relies on gas is trying to build up gas reserves as they have been looking at the German situation and thinking we don't; want to get that expose. It;s that rush of market orders at the same time ( even though they are matching and satisfying the contracts ) that id fuelling the risk analysis and allowing the brokers to basically get away with price hiking every day. This approach of resetting the market price say at 100 still allows large profits all round for both the traders and suppliers but we would probably be stuck with this Autumn for the high prices but surely it could work for gas delivery contracts starting in Dec this year and including Jan Feb and Mar next year.

This could be my last year as a Season Card holder. I can not justify the high cost of a SC coupled with the travel costs to Boro given the ever spiralling cost of living. It will be 49 yrs, 1 season short of 50 years if that proves the case . I will probably have to revert to an occasional match attendee if inflation continues as it is beyond this season. 🤷‍♂️😭

I said the site rather than the thread, there is another thread appearing to question our support for Ukraine in view of the economic consequences of upsetting the thug Putin.

I'm happy with "us" paying more as long as "us" means our country and not the individual people within the country. I wouldn't want to allow Putin to do what he wants just so wholesale gas prices might drop but there are other measures we can take on a governmental level to protect people from increasing bills whilst also standing up to Putin.
