Angela Rayner

You only have to google it. There are stories in various newspapers. I’d rather believe a key worker at Asda than the canary. Ask which has the political agenda

And you'd use those stories to believe the generalisation as it suits your narrative.

If it was a Tory MP calling a Labour MP scum, many on here would be outraged, saying how posh and elitist and entitled it was.

Personally I think it's a shame that folk try to justify it.

Personally, I think its worse to suggest that members of the Labour front bench are glad about Covid-19 and looking simply to make political capital out of it. If I were Angela Rayner I would have called him far worse. But go on there Cuthbert, ignore the message the Tory was trying to convey by smearing the opposition front bench with sick lies and instead focus on AR responding by calling him scum instead.

It's this refusal of some to acknowledge the truly horrendous actions of the Tories that are causing great harm to this country.

In this instance I would think sticks and stones etc, poor Tory boy crying on because he's been called out for scum while his party inflicts hunger, poverty and death on the people of this country. I know who should be most ashamed in all of this and it isn't Angela Rayner.

Sadly we have a government that lies and cheats every single day, and has just forced down a bill offering desperately needed help to the poorest children in our country, while giving obscene amounts (not even comparable to what's needed to feed the kids) to each other's companies. I'm calling that scummy behaviour.
I don't really disagree with you Harry.
I also think that there's a difference between calling behaviour or policies scummy, and directly calling someone scum.
I do take your point. It’s just all too often the real story gets forgotten or moved on from too quickly by whataboutery and accusations of virtue signalling or bias etc
In this case, a government voting against helping out the most basic needs of the most needy children in society during the most difficult time of a generation, when things are about to get worse for many who will undoubtedly lose part of their salary or their job completely due to the pandemic response. It’s completely vile and drew a reaction from an MP who should know far better, and who apologised for her actions.

I agree that MPs shouldn’t be standing up in Parliament calling others scum, no matter what side of the debate they are on.

I do agree with Rayner though.

I don't disagree with you mate. This thread though, and the OP seemed (IMO) to be specifically referring to Angela Rayner and what she said. That is what I commented on in my original post. It wasn't a distraction tactic as you suggested.

And you'd use those stories to believe the generalisation as it suits your narrative.

Not at all, someone was called a liar due to a story in the canary.... if that isnt suiting the narrative i dont know what is

Oh by the way i support free school meals. Hows that for your narrative

No one is calling anyone a "liar" - lets not detract from the fact that a further million children have been driven into living in poverty since the pandemic started - and many dont have a basic stable diet - and go hungry.
With working families losing jobs and those in work - still below the poverty line - lets focus on priorities.

Gaz: "............and they were unable to stop those people from buying alcohol with the vouchers."
Staff are breaking the law if they are allowing adults to buy alcohol or cigarettes in exchange for vouchers.

Are you telling me that those retailers dont have security or the means to refuse any customer from demanding anything they want from a cashire?

I refuse to get into an argument about "hje said" "she said" - Ive "heard" that red diesel is fraudulantly traded by farmers - who buy it at a discount - subsidised by the tax - payer, but until I know for certain - Im not going to build an opinion until I know the facts.
This particular store doesn’t have security, it’s a convenient version. They are under instruction not to decline these people. They have their own channels and hr to go through, but I don’t have a clue whether they have a speak up culture

Child Poverty Action Group -
https://cpag.org.uk/child-poverty
The following figures were updated in July 2020 - [evidently the impact of the pandemic isnt included - which is a horrifying prospect for our children and poor families!].

......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The facts and figures show the reality of child poverty in the UK.

  • There were 4.2 million children living in poverty in the UK in 2018-19. That's 30 per cent of children, or nine in a classroom of 30.1
  • 44 per cent of children living in lone-parent families are in poverty.2 Lone parents face a higher risk of poverty due to the lack of an additional earner, low rates of maintenance payments, gender inequality in employment and pay, and childcare costs.
  • Children from black and minority ethnic groups are more likely to be in poverty: 46 per cent are now in poverty, compared with 26 per cent of children in White British families.3
  • Work does not provide a guaranteed route out of poverty in the UK. 72 per cent of children growing up in poverty live in a household where at least one person works.4
  • Children in large families are at a far greater risk of living in poverty – 43 per cent of children living in families with 3 or more children live in poverty.5
  • Childcare and housing are two of the costs that take the biggest toll on families’ budgets.
  • Between 1998 and 2003 reducing child poverty was made a priority - with a comprehensive strategy and investment in children - and the number of children in poverty fell by 600,000.6
  • Removing the two-child limit and the benefit cap would lift 100,000s of children out of poverty.7
  • Increasing child benefit would substantially reduce child poverty as well as providing support to all families with the extra costs children bring.

(Updated July 2020. All poverty figures are after housing costs)

He said liar or mistaken, where the story rebuking it came from is irrelevant as it was reporting the government's own guidelines and questioned the lack of proof to the claims made.

Its great you support free school meals, however the point stands that your would rather believe a story on an internet message board then the facts, which suits your narrative.

Gaz - Im probably not alone [Im making an assumption there], but it is extremely concerning I agree, if staff are "under instruction" [from Managers and Supervisors?] to allow people to obtain age-restricted items prohibited by the Government under the guidance https://www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-summer-food-fund#supermarkets-available

It has to be one of those national retail chains - in which case the local MP / National Fraud Office / Local Councillors / Police will be interested.

The company head office can also be contacted directly. My own inclination would be to report the scenario you outline. The choice is of the staff - but fear and ignorance of the law is no defence in being complicit in fraud.

Bullying staff into committing illegal acts is a criminal offence and in the case of all of those companies they will have statutory obligations to fulfill, including disciplinary procedures.

I hope whoever it is whom you know has the courage to report the scenario you describe .

I had dealings with Angela a few years back, used to be our UNISON rep prior to becoming an MP..........feisty, to say the least. :)

Very open and honest and speaks her mind which, for an MP, may be a problem. Although correct, there is a time and a place for that level of name calling(y)

There is of course a long history of such language used by politicians, my personal favourite being from the great Nye Bevan:

"No amount of cajolery and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep and burning hatred for the Tory party. So far as I am concerned, they are lower than vermin."

If we are now at the stage where we are twisting about the "FACT" (looesly called as such) that feckless parents are able to exchange vouchers for alcohol then we as a society have lost the plot...

For F%$KS sake, its a Government system that delivers these vouchers and if (IF) that is the case then THEY need to do somthing to correct that issue, not use it as a reason to punish and deprive the kids of the less feckless parents and those whose circumstances have changed, from the essentials of food in their bellies...

any moron on here arguing against feeding children in one of the richest countries in the world really need to have look at them selves in the mirror and bang one side of their tilted heads to shake out any feking cotton wool or toys in there that are subduing rational thought...

shame on you!!!

You may find this interesting - if not just the irony.....
Ben Bradley,MP for Mansfield [the first ever Tory MP to be elected in Mansfield!] row with Marcus Rashford - as reported in the local Nottingham rag - including some reader comments at the bottom...

Mansfield MP Ben Bradley in Twitter spat with Marcus Rashford over free school meals
"Ever-extending freebies are a sticking plaster not a solution."

Mansfield's MP Ben Bradley has engaged in a row with footballer Marcus Rashford over free school meals.

The Manchester United footballer launched a campaign to end child poverty in the UK earlier this year earning him an MBE.

The striker hit headlines after forcing Boris Johnson into a U-turn over extending free school meals into the summer holidays.

He has since joined up with the UK's major supermarkets as part of the 'National Food Strategy'.

It would see a major expansion of free school meals, school holiday support and the Healthy Start voucher scheme in a bid to ensure no child goes hungry.

Posting on Twitter on Wednesday morning (October 21) Mr Rashford said he would be "paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children" as pressure mounts for the Government to back the campaign.

He went on to post a series of tweets regarding the impact of Covid-19 on families' income and increasing rates of unemployment.

"Why keep punishing our most disadvantaged? Give our children a chance. All eyes on the Commons," he added.

It caught the attention of Conservative MP for Mansfield, Ben Bradley, who responded directly to Mr Rashford on the issues in extending free school meals outside of term time.

Mansfield MP Ben Bradley
He tweeted: "[Government] has lots of responsibilities: supporting the vulnerable, helping people to help themselves, balancing the books.

"Not as simple as you to make out Marcus. Extending [free school meals] to [school holidays] passes responsibility for feeding kids away from parents, to the State.

"It increases dependency."

The government has so far refused to extend provision in England over the half-term and Christmas breaks.

Labour will use a Commons vote to call for an extension on the scheme until Easter 2021.

In his reply, Mr Rashford posted: "Ben, the economy already pays a high price for child hunger. If children were fed properly you would increase educational attainment and boost life chances.

"Kelloggs UK calculated we would spend at least £5.2M a year on lost teaching hours as teachers are caring for hungry kids

"And for a more humane response, since March, 32% of families have suffered a drop in income. Nearly 1 million have fallen off the payroll.

"This is not dependency, this a cry for help. There are no jobs!! 250% increase in food poverty and rising. Nobody said this was simple..."

But Mr Bradley came back with a raft of measures the Tory Government had done to support low income households, describing the extension of free school meals as a "sticking plaster".

"This is why we expanded [free school meals], introduced breakfast clubs, increased school budgets and made the welfare system more generous [including] increasing [Universal Credit] during Covid," he tweeted.

"We're doing a lot to help the most vulnerable children, but ever- extending freebies are a sticking plaster not a solution."

How did this clown ever get into Parliament? Did a politics degree at Trent uni, got a side hustle with a Tory MP, went into Parliament.

Rashford’s been around. Bradley’s been a loudmouth on the tax dollar from day 1. Stunt double for Lloyd Christmas next.

When Notts goes to tier 3 lockdown next week with the resulting job losses and business failures there are going to be a lot of hungry kids in Mansfield! .. I hope the parents remember which way Bradley voted come election time!

Everyone that voted Tory in the last election is responsible for this your reaping what you sowed!

So a privately educated Tory MP argues on the side of not feeding hungry school children, this should not even be up for debate in 21st Britain. Oh forgot the Nasty party are in power how does that old saying go

"same old Tories", levelling up my sole.
Every Tory MP today was emailed by party leaders to give negative message/tweets about Rashfords project utterly deplorable.

Rashford has had his life there. There have been some real awful comments from Tory MPs in the last 48 hours on this subject, showing a real lack of basic human empathy. Was it Bradley or one of the other monsters that started waffling the same old dirge about "celebrities virtue signalling" - VS is just a way for people to undermine any empathy, any pressure for social change. It's an appalling way for an elected politician serving the people to behave, refusing to listen to the people and actively attempting to ridicule and undermine them.

Mr Bradley hasnt endeared himself to the people of Mansfield - an area of relatively high unemployment / low skill base / low wage / high relative deprivation.
He is typical of the extremist Tory`s who would never have gained office - but were swept into Parliament on a tide of frustration by an ill-informed and justifiably angry electorate.

He is a source of constant derision and amusement with his spoutings and is charactured as being the detached child of Rees-Mogg.
