Angela Rayner

Should she have said it? No.
Was she right? Yes.

hardly the crime of century and she's done the right thing and apologised. The fact she's said it shows the strength of feeling and how much she cares. That makes her infinitely more fit to be an MP than any number of Tories who are purely in it for self interest and will happily trot out the party line however morally reprehensible it is.

You cant expect anyone to give that assertion any credibility without backing it up with facts Gaz.
Where is your proof?

Here is the guidance on food vouchers for children: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-summer-food-fund#supermarkets-available

The following National Retailers are designated by the Government to accept Vouchers:
Supermarkets available

Through Edenred, you can access eGift cards for:

  • Aldi
  • Asda
  • Company Shop Group
  • Iceland, including The Food Warehouse Stores
  • M&S
  • McColl’s
  • Morrisons
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Tesco
  • Waitrose

Company Shop Group eGift cards are accepted in Community Shops and Company Shops. Further details can be found on their website.

Redeeming the vouchers

Once families have received their voucher, they will be able to redeem them in store at the selected retailer by either:

  • presenting the voucher on a smartphone or tablet
  • presenting a paper copy of the voucher

Guidance is available from Edenred for parents to help answer any questions they may have. The voucher does not have to be spent in full, in one transaction. To check how much money is left on the eGift card, parents can ask the supermarket’s customer services team when in store.

The vouchers must be used for food, and must not be redeemed for any age-restricted items, such as alcohol, cigarettes or lottery tickets.

Gaz - if you know that any of those retail outlets are exchanging vouchers for "age - restricted items" - You have a duty to report it - because they are breaking the law!

She should know better. Type of language that incites hate. Tone it down

Agree to a point - I don’t think she should have referred to him as scum. She should have been better prepared and called him out for his appalling rationale for refusing to support feeding poor kids.

I’m not sure it fuels hate but may do. I do think language about ‘activist lawyers[ (leading to one being stabbed) and ‘Muslim women looking like letterboxes’ is in a different league.
All language fuelling hate tho is a big no.

I think she is developing into a really good Shadow Minister personally - cares with an absolute passion about social injustice. That kind of passion is needed with this lot.

On your ‘voucher’ point - some of the biggies (Sainsbury’s for instance) do exclude sale of alcohol at the till but, for sure, it gets abused.
Just remembered - they are working on a card that can’t be used for booze n fags. It will need expensive technology to accept it which will cut out the cowboys (normally local shops are the worst culprits)

£Billions made available without so much as a conversion.

Tories fight down hard on everything else in interviews, Twitter spats and in parliament over funding to save lives and feeding starving children costing a fraction of the above.

Sickening and shameful, scum does not do them justice.
If it was a Tory MP calling a Labour MP scum, many on here would be outraged, saying how posh and elitist and entitled it was.

Personally I think it's a shame that folk try to justify it.

one of my close family members works in one of said supermarkets and they were unable to stop those people from buying alcohol with the vouchers.

they could have lied to me but not sure what reason they would lie. Maybe there’s a loophole around if they buy one item that isn’t age restricted it allows the vouchers to be deducted off the full shop. I don’t know, it’s only what said person said to me in the summer

Tory children’s minister was just branded a ‘liar’ over free school meals claims
https://www.thecanary.co/opinion/20...branded-a-liar-over-free-school-meals-claims/

So by extension Gaz is either a liar or mistaken.

Unfortunately, many people get taken in by simple headline grabbing social media posts that deliberately paint a divisive narrative. It’s easily done and some people believe it because they want to, because it matches their view of a situation.
Other people are a bit more innocently ‘guilty’ of it - ‘well they are a person of influence and they wouldn’t have posted that without knowing they were right, so no need to check it out, I’ll just take it as gospel’.
And that’s a major, major reason why we are in the absolute mess we are. The truth is no longer relevant.

This post reminds me what I like about her. She has the same common touch that the wonderful Mo Mowlam had. How we could do with her back again!

But it wasn’t, was it.
And plenty on this thread have said she shouldn’t have said it and she was wrong to do so.

She shouldn’t have said it, it was wrong to do

If you read that article again: she was taken to task because she based her assertion on "I`ve heard..".
As a Government Minister "I`ve heard" is not an acceptible premis on which to impliment and direct policy on tackling child poverty and feeding hungry children.

In a democracy and being someone willing to hear reasoned argument I cant see a problem challenging anecdotal "evidence".
Im asking Gaz to back up his assertion.
Thats neither calling Gaz a "liar" or "mistaken".

If I assert that you have been spending your voucher on age-restricted items I expect to be asked to provide proof!

Hey Cuthbert - she shouldn’t have said it, it was wrong to do so.

There, you can move on to your next distrcation play now.
If you can't see the point I'm making, then that's a shame.

I just don't think anyone should really call anyone else scum.

(You have accepted that in your post. Fair enough. Sadly others think it's OK).

Sadly we have a government that lies and cheats every single day, and has just forced down a bill offering desperately needed help to the poorest children in our country, while giving obscene amounts (not even comparable to what's needed to feed the kids) to each other's companies. I'm calling that scummy behaviour.

No one is calling anyone a "liar" - lets not detract from the fact that a further million children have been driven into living in poverty since the pandemic started - and many dont have a basic stable diet - and go hungry.
With working families losing jobs and those in work - still below the poverty line - lets focus on priorities.

Gaz: "............and they were unable to stop those people from buying alcohol with the vouchers."
Staff are breaking the law if they are allowing adults to buy alcohol or cigarettes in exchange for vouchers.

Are you telling me that those retailers dont have security or the means to refuse any customer from demanding anything they want from a cashire?

I refuse to get into an argument about "hje said" "she said" - Ive "heard" that red diesel is fraudulantly traded by farmers - who buy it at a discount - subsidised by the tax - payer, but until I know for certain - Im not going to build an opinion until I know the facts.

She was wrong to use the language she did, especially given her position in the Labour Party. Her sentiment may well have more than a ring of truth about it, but many on this board understandably call people out for inappropriate language or behaviour and how the Tories treat the have nots in society, It is never a good look to lower your standards as she did yesterday. She has rightly apologised.

It is entirely reasonable to admit she was out of order in her choice of words, yet agree with her in spirit, double standards never sit well. Labour leaders and their MP’s really need to show greater self awareness during emotive discussions. She has apologised and hopefully a line can be drawn as well as a lesson learned. Starmer will have been furious I would bet.

They have a duty to report said retailer.
If , that is they have any morals.

I do take your point. It’s just all too often the real story gets forgotten or moved on from too quickly by whataboutery and accusations of virtue signalling or bias etc
In this case, a government voting against helping out the most basic needs of the most needy children in society during the most difficult time of a generation, when things are about to get worse for many who will undoubtedly lose part of their salary or their job completely due to the pandemic response. It’s completely vile and drew a reaction from an MP who should know far better, and who apologised for her actions.

I agree that MPs shouldn’t be standing up in Parliament calling others scum, no matter what side of the debate they are on.

I do agree with Rayner though.

They have a duty to report said retailer.

You only have to google it. There are stories in various newspapers. I’d rather believe a key worker at Asda than the canary. Ask which has the political agenda

Tory MP's and this governments behaviour since Boris Johnson became leader has more than earned them this title.

If Labour acted in the same manner I would be equally as critical.

Hearsay , seems to be what many use when deciding to vote these days
