After lifting the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup title and subsequently returning to Premier League action with successive wins against Everton and Sheffield United, Manchester City now begin the defence of their FA Cup crown. Championship side Huddersfield Town provide the opposition, with boss Pep Guardiola likely to rotate his troops as a result, especially as he maintains a six-match unbeaten H2H run (W4, D2) with the only home FA Cup tie in that time delivering a huge 5-1 victory.

Despite returning to winning ways of late, there is still room for improvement for City, especially if they’re to get anywhere near repeating their famous treble from last season. The bulk of that work is needed in defence, as Guardiola’s side have kept just one clean sheet across their last ten outings outside of the Club World Cup (W5, D4, L1), though they haven’t lost any of their prior 33 competitive home matches ahead of a return to the Etihad.

Life this season is proving a little more difficult for visiting Huddersfield, who, after losing 4-1 away to Leicester City on New Year's Day, saw their safety buffer to the Championship relegation spots cut to just three points. That result in turn extended their poor form of recording just one win from their past eight outings (D3, L4) which hardly stands as ideal preparation ahead of this short trip over the Pennines.

With 44 goals conceded across their 26 league outings this season, only three teams have a leakier backline than Huddersfield in England’s second tier. On top of that, on eight occasions this campaign across all competitions the Terriers have conceded 3+ goals in a single match, an unwanted record that could be further extended here if they’re not at their very best.

Players to watch: After grabbing a brace of assists last time out, Man City’s Phil Foden has now been directly involved in 17 strikes across all competitions this campaign (G9, A8). Huddersfield defender Michał Helik will primarily be out to keep him quiet, but he’s a threat at the other end too, netting seven goals this season, six of which have come away from home.

Hot stat: Huddersfield have conceded 16 goals across the last five H2Hs.

Although Shrewsbury aren’t quite the main rivals of Hollywood-backed Welsh side Wrexham, this cross border rivalry remains strong between the two sets of fans, even though they haven’t met since 2008! Despite sitting pretty in League One, Shrewsbury find themselves as the home outsiders here given Wrexham’s flying form at the top end of League Two, with these rivals set to face each other in league action next season should the visitors achieve their targets.

Making their seventh consecutive third round appearance, Shrewsbury have stifled some of England’s best during that time, earning replays against the likes of Liverpool, West Ham, and Wolves in recent years. If that’s not enough to inspire this team to overcome their slight underdog status, then perhaps looking back to the 2003 Shrewsbury side who famously shocked Premier League Everton 2-1 at this very stage will.

The magic of the FA Cup finally returns for Wrexham, who are treated to a derby day clash against Shrewsbury in what is just their third appearance in the third round across the last 11 years. The Welsh club have already enjoyed a couple of famous FA Cup dates under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, defeating Championship Coventry 4-3 away from home before earning a replay against Sheffield United after a stunning 3-3 draw.

Just a month away from the three-year anniversary of their famous takeover, the prestigious owners’ and their Disney camera crew will be hoping for a blockbuster episode. The famous Hollywood finish produced by club legend Mickey Thomas when scoring the first of two late goals to defeat reigning English champions Arsenal 2-1 in the third round back in January 1992 could inspire this current crop, with that game remaining arguably their highest profile victory in club history.

Players to watch: Ryan Bowman has scored three of Shrewsbury’s six FA Cup goals en route to the third round, whilst all three of his competitive scoring appearances this season saw him net the winner. Trying to outdo him will be former Premier League player Steven Fletcher, who scored his first hat-trick since 2007/08 in the New Year’s Day league action for Wrexham.
1704630121383.png
Hot streak: Each of Shrewsbury’s last eight FA Cup matches have seen both teams score and over 2.5 total goals (W6, L2).

A standout tie of the FA Cup third round pits the competition's most successful side and 14-time winners Arsenal against current Premier League (PL) leaders and eight-time winners Liverpool, in a repeat of a fixture that produced a 1-1 draw in league action just before Christmas. These two sides have responded differently to the relentlessness of a PL title race recently, with Arsenal losing ground by losing their last two games, while Liverpool have thrived under pressure by winning their previous two outings.

The Gunners will therefore be happy to see FA Cup action return to the Emirates, as they’ve proven incredibly hard to beat in such a setting having lost just three of their last 49 home FA Cup matches (W36, D10). Manager Mikel Arteta will hope that directly translates to prolonging his side’s good fortune over their visitors in football’s oldest club competition, since Arsenal have won the previous three FA Cup ties between these two.

This Liverpool side may be the biggest threat to their host’s impressive home FA Cup record, as their aim will be to surpass this stage of the competition for what will be a 12th time in their last 13 attempts. Jürgen Klopp will have to mastermind a strategy to do so without his main weapon up front, as he’ll be losing Mohamed Salah to Africa Cup of Nations duties prior to this match.

The Reds therefore have to try and continue their fine form on the road without their Egyptian kingpin, where they’ve won three of their last four away matches (L1). That mirrors their recent record at the Emirates, having won three successive games there without conceding before losing 3-2 in the PL last season.

Players to watch: Two of Arsenal’s three goals that day were scored by Bukayo Saka, which kickstarted a run of him scoring 17 of his last 23 goals at home. As for Liverpool, Diogo Jota has played a part in his team scoring in all their prior four visits to the Emirates, registering six direct goal contributions in that time (G5, A1).
1704630181672.png
Hot stat: 16 of Liverpool’s last 18 away matches have seen both teams score.

Forest v Blackpool:

Blackpool hope to repeat their feat of 2023 as they face Premier League opposition in Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Seasiders have had a long-drawn-out process to this stage of the competition, which has been shrouded in controversy. Blackpool made easy work of Bromley in the first round, but then just a day before their tie with Forest Green Rovers, it was postponed because of the League Two side fielding an ineligible player. It was in the week before Christmas that Blackpool beat FGR, and now their reward is a trip to Nottinghamshire.
1704631551292.png
[Still knocking em in: 15 goals and 3 assists this season - so far]

Last season Blackpool convincingly beat Forest 4-1 at Bloomfield Road thanks to goals from Marvin Ekpiteta, Ian Poveda, CJ Hamilton and Jerry Yates. 12 members of the first-team squad that day are still at the club, and Neil Critchley will hope that he can replicate what Michael Appleton and his side did exactly a year-ago to the day.

In regard to team news, the Africa Cup of Nations takes place over the next month, and already players have jetted off to the continent to begin their preparations. A total of six players from the Reds have been called up for AFCON and that leaves Nuno Espirito Santo unable to call upon half a starting XI.

Blackpool had a busy festive period and not everyone has come through unscathed. Several players are working their way back, and could come in contention after missing the last few games. Forest's absentee list is more down to their international call-ups, but there are some missing through injury. Here's the latest injury and team news ahead of kick-off.

The Posh v Leeds

1704635384781.png

Got a soft spot for Posh [Charters Barge on the Welland!]

*Posh are currently 3rd in EFL League 1. Just 2 points behind Bolton in the automatic promotion places.

New Peterborough United captain insists his side have nothing to lose in their big Sunday FA Cup showdown with Leeds United

1704632079145.png
[Harrison Burrows. 21 and been at London road since he was six. A firm favourite and being followed by scouts from clubs in leagues above.]

Unusually for Posh, they will start a home game as underdogs in front of a sell-out crowd of just under 13,000.

But they go into the game in great form with just one defeat in their last 19 League One matches and on the back of a thrilling 3-2 win against promotion rivals Derby County at Pride Park. Burrows scored in that game before Posh claimed victory with two goals in the final 10 minutes.

"When the draw was made we are buzzing to get Leeds,” Burrows, who will lead Posh out following the return of on-loan captain Peter Kioso to parent club Rotherham United, said. “They’ve blown away a lot of teams in the Championship this season, so it will obviously be a tough game.

"But we are playing really well, and we have nothing to lose. As a team, we know all our roles and responsibilities, and we are looking forward to the challenge against a top Championship side.

"We will have a go, and the game against Derby was a typical Posh performance. We just don’t give up, which we’ve shown a few times now this season.

"Scoring was a great boost to my confidence after giving the ball away for their first goal, and emotions took over at the end when we celebrated in front of our fans.

“It was just an amazing game.”

Luton Town v Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers' Cameron Jerome eyeing cup magic at Luton

1704632907515.png
1704632701826.png

[Now 37 and into double figures for clubs played. An essential component of Wanderer's climb to second place in EFL League One].

CAMERON Jerome has given Wanderers the inside track on Sunday’s FA Cup opponents Luton Town.
The former Hatters' striker is interested to see how well his former club copes with the tag of favourites, having spent each week in the Premier League punching above their weight.

And he believes the notorious tight Kenilworth Road pitch, which has tripped up a few big guns already this season, won’t be as big an issue for the Whites.

“To be honest, if we were going to the Etihad, the Emirates or Tottenham’s new stadium then maybe I’d expect us to be in awe of the surroundings but, no disrespect to Luton, we are used to grounds like that. We are privileged to play at this fantastic stadium for home games but when we travel to Fleetwood, Bristol Rovers or Burton, places like that, then it is what we are used to, the smaller old-fashioned grounds where the pitch is on top of you.

“To the outside, us going there and getting a result would be a huge shock because it is a Premier League side against a League One side – and I have been in that position, they don’t want to end up on the wrong end of an upset.

“To us, we’re quietly confident that if we stick to the game-plan, what we show on a weekly basis we can cause them problems.

“It is the magic of the cup, there’s no guarantees, the Premier League side will try and stamp their authority. We respect them, but we fancy our chances of causing a shock.”
1704633242772.png
[Jerome made 52 appearances for Luton and left to sign for Bolton in April 2023].

Jerome has played 32 games in the FA Cup in his career, and scored for Luton in 2022 against Harrogate Town at the third-round stage.

Still waiting for his first competitive strike for Bolton, Jerome says his wait has been an agonizing one – albeit with some extenuating circumstances.

“As a forward you want goals and I have found myself in an unusual situation, limited game time, so it is what it is,” he said.

“As an experienced player, I know you can have these moments in your career. Playing a back-up role is something I haven’t really done in my career but at this stage I have had to accept it, really, this is the transition phase I am in. I didn’t join to be a number one striker.

“If that is five minutes here and there, to see the game out and get the game over the line, I am happy to do that. I feel like I am contributing in that respect.

“As for the goals, the boys who are playing week-in, week-out, I’ll leave the load for them to score.

“Of course, I want to change it – I came off on Saturday and thought, ‘how did I not score that one?’ “You need rhythm, you need an edge. You can do all the training drills you want, have all the experience behind you, but if you are not getting match practice then you are going to be out of synch a bit.”

Jerome spent 18 months with Luton, helping to lift them towards the top end of the Championship in a similar back-up role.

“There was a bit more game time, and it was more regular, but at this stage of my career it is what is required,” he said. “The manager needs me on a day-to-day basis on the training ground, giving that bit of wisdom, even to the coaching staff if there is something they can pick my brains about.

“I am still grateful to be out there, doing my best with the lads and helping a club to be successful.”

West Brom v Aldershot Town
1704633780297.png

Aldershot Town is probably the youngest football club in the EFL: "The Shots" rose out of the ashes of the original "Aldershot FC" who went bust. In 1992 "The Shots" began life in the Isthmian League and climbed 5 tiers into the National League.
1704634176914.png

Aldershot Town travel to the Hawthorns to take on West Brom in the third round of the FA Cup this Sunday the 7th of January, with over 4,500 Shots fans expected to follow into the Smethwick End. Tommy Widdrington spoke to ShotsTV ahead of the fixture…

Tommy Widdrington gave some thoughts ahead of the game:

“I’m feeling the same as everybody else, massive anticipation, we’re looking forwards to the occasion, but ultimately it’s a day of work for us
“We’re in the game to have these ocassions and I think on the back of the good festive period we’ve had I think everyone is in a really good physical and mental state to get at it.”
“I’m always positive, I believe in the way we play I believe in the group, but what I’ve got to be mindful of and where we’ve got to temper out enthusiasm to win the game with not getting walloped because there is a huge gulp between the two football teams and football clubs

The Shots have already pulled off some massive results in the FA Cup this season, and West Brom will be a historic day for the club regardless of the outcome, here is what Widdrington said on the side's run so far:

“The FA Cup has perennial habit of throwing out results as we ourselves already know we’ve been part of two this season, and on the other side of that Aldershot have been on the wrong end of them in previous seasons
“We’ll go there as well prepared as we can be we’ll have them watched as much as we can in terms of the same way we do on a weekly basis in terms of our league opposition
“I’m really proud of taking this club to West Brom, it’s a redemption day for our football club because there’s been a lot of low stuff recently and a lot of really low stuff a little further away

There will be some notable absentees from the side, joint top scorer Josh Stokes misses out through suspension and Haji Mnoga will miss the clash as he prepares for AFCON with Tanzania:

“In the case of Josh Stokes, one mans dissapointment will be another mans fortune, somebody will get an opportunity because he’s been a special player for us this season
“It’s a travesty in my eyes that that lad doesn’t get the opportunity to show what he can do on that stage, but, it’s happened
“I’m delighted for Haji to have got the recognition as far as I’m concerned he’s our player, I know he’s registered to Portsmouth but he’s with us for the season

Ahead of the game, Widdrington was also talking about his team selection, and how he will try and tackle the task of the Championship high-flyers:

“As we speak the team is floating around in my head, I think I know roughly where we are, but there are a couple of guys who I am considering
“We’ve got to try and give oursleves a chance and that means playing to the best of our ability the best way we can and that’s what we try and do every game”

The Shots are going into the clash off the back of a festive period which saw them pick up 4 points out of 6 over local rivals Woking, including a 3-2 win at Woking on New Year's Day, a fixture which Tommy Widdrington was full of praise for…

“I think if any team takes 4 of 6 points out of it then the bragging rights is the biggest part of it for fans, ultimately for managers it’s another 3 points on the board.”

West Ham V Bristol City

The Hammers are favourites, but with a new Manager and fresh enthusiasm, the Robins are on the up, even though they lost to Millwall at the start of the New Year. Young players have been given their chance and shown they are capable in the Championship.
What's to say they can't step up and take on the East Londoners and win today?
They have a number of injury problems, but will give it a good go. Carlos Corberan has made changes to his usual team selection, which may be an indicator of where his priorities lie?

Robins injury latest:
1704635000039.png
Ross McCrorie looks set to play for Bristol City Under-21s over the next fortnight as the Scottish defender hopefully nears the end of his recovery from an injury that has kept him out for the last six months.

After signing from Aberdeen, McCrorie made two appearances for the Robins during the summer, against Torquay United and Swindon Town, but then contracted a serious bacterial infection which required surgery.

Since returning to training in November, the right-back has effectively been undertaking a new pre-season to build his fitness levels and overall sharpness back up and January was pinpointed as the month where he could make his long-awaited Robins bow.

That will still need to wait a little longer, but with Bournemouth visiting the High Performance Centre on Tuesday and then a trip to QPR the following week, McCrorie could well return in red for the final stages of his recovery programme.

“Ross is close, perhaps this weekend is a little too soon,” head coach Liam Manning said. “It’s the back-end of a pre-season, so Ross is in full training, played a part in an in-house game, so he’s very, very close. He’s training really well and is a good spot, so it’s just that final stage for him.

“He’s driven, he’s hungry, he’s come down here, and he’s been desperate to make a good impression, the injury has set him back to there’s that element of wanting to go again. He’s one that’s going to really compliment the group, he’s different to what we’ve got, his character, his communication and the way he sets the standards is really impressive. I’m really looking forward to seeing him when he’s back.

"He's kind of had to go through a pre-season so the opportunity to get him match minutes and build him up that way, alongside integrating him into the group, it's finding that right balance ultimately, so we'll definitely be using those fixtures."

Manning confirmed on Thursday that winger Mark Sykes has been ruled out for a few weeks with an unspecified injury after leaving the field against Millwall on New Year’s Day, but has now detailed the Republic of Ireland international experienced a “minor” hamstring issue.

Sykes will miss Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at West Ham and potentially next Saturday’s Championship trip to Preston North End but, at this stage at least, Manning doesn’t believe it will be a significant absence.

0_JMP_Bristol_City_Swindon_Town_RS_130JPG.jpg

Bristol City defender Haydon Roberts (Robbie Stephenson/JMP)
Having welcomed back Andy King to his match day squad for the visit of Millwall, after the veteran midfielder injured his hamstring against Ipswich in late October, another player to have departed during that game could also soon be returning to the squad. Left-back Haydon Roberts sustained an ankle injury at the end of the 1-0 defeat, after coming on as a second-half substitute, but has now re-joined the senior group.

“Haydon is progressing really well, back in pretty much full training but needs the extra workload back on top,” Manning added. “So he’s another one who we expect to see in the next couple of weeks.”

Kal Naismith remains out with a hamstring injury, while Ayman Benarous is a long-term absentee. Defender Rob Atkinson is making positive progress, though, after suffering a setback in December around his return from an ACL injury, although as has been the case throughout his recovery, City are being extra cautious over his workload.

Atkinson did make an appearance for the U21s against Sunderland in November, but then a minor injury during an in-house 11vs11 game extended his time-out, having initially left the field at the Stadium of Light in February.

“Rob’s going well, he’s out on the grass doing midfield stuff at the moment,” Manning said. “Given what happened previously, he’s one not to rush in terms of making sure we do everything to get him in the best shape possible.”

I think Man. City will win. They've put out a decent side too.

Edit: Although they'd struggle to put out a bad side, TBF.

Chuffed Blackpool are giving Trees a run for their money.
Flippin detest Leeds! Hope Posh get into them. 30 to go.
Looks like Citeh are walking it. 4-0

West Ham won't be looking forward to a trip to Ashton Gate, nor Forest to Bloomfield Road. Blackpool almost scored in the final ten minutes, but trees were fortunate.

Arsenal slight favourites, with home advantage?

Slight digression, but I think Jermaine Jenas is doing well as a TV presenter.

Arsenal.

Very strange kit. Is there some reason that they are playing in white with black outline white numbers on backs no names and sponsor in same black outlined white?

They are proper going for it though!
