Alfie jones incoming

Confess to not knowing an awful lot about the lad, but if he is "too slow", that's just what we don't need in our defence - we already have a glaring lack of pace defensively and in the rest of the squad.
Yeah, slightly worrying, but hopefully that problem will be addressed elsewhere. If he is going to be a starter in a back 4 alongside someone else who is slow, then it’s a problem. But he may be part of a back 5 where the others are all quick, so it’s then not such an issue.

Obviously in an ideal world, everyone we signed would be over 6 foot tall, 2 footed, fast, intelligent and good on the ball. In reality, that’s not happening. If Jones improves us, he’s probably worth a £2m punt.

George Friend was signed from a relegated team was he not?

Coventry had one of the outstanding midfielders in the division last season ...signed from a relegated team.

It's a daft view tbh.

Don’t know much about this lad, but… how come he couldn’t get a game for Hull at the end of last season?

Is pace really that important for a centre back? Useful certainly. But if you can read the game well and do everything else well, its not essential. Been plenty of top class centre backs over the years not blessed with pace.

If you're relying on your centre backs winning foot races against the opposition I'd argue you've got bigger issues to worry about.

Depends on your defensive line and how high up the pitch you’re pushing I suppose.

Players like Harry Maguire for example. Brilliant at Leicester where they sat deeper and absorbed pressure. Exposed whenever Man Utd try to play higher

Generally the better your forward players the higher you want to play which means you need pacey defenders for the ball over the top or the booming diagonals behind your wide defenders.

Yep, if you have two slow CBs you can't play a high line, I don't mind having one CB who is slowish but can read a game and is good on the ball, one quick CB in the pairing is always the way forward IMO.

Steady eddie, has experience, which we need, can’t see him getting in above a fit Lenihan and Fry mind. We need CB cover, Edwards was a CB I think so should have an idea. His lack of speed on recovery is a worry, we’ll just have to wait and see really if it happens.
