Air source heat pumps.

Because of the way covid has affected my business, I am on top up benefits until I can rebuild, so am entitled to a government grant of upto £10k to install one, I have a surveyor calling shortly so was just wondering if anyone has one.

Not my area of expertise but about 5 years ago as part of a project funded by EDF to look at alternative energy uses in the home, we looked at air source heat pumps for three domestic properties that were built in the 80's. To make it a viable source of heat, the upgrades required to the loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, GF flooring, windows & doors, meant it wasn’t viable for the project.

As an alternative we installed solar panels & a district heating system with a gas CHP boiler.

Unfortunately the installer didn’t change the electric meters from analogue dials to digital, so through the day with no one at home they went backwards. “No one noticed” until one tenant went away for summer holidays, got a negative bill and then was being pursued for fraud.

Was it not viable when you include the equipment cost and installation costs or not viable even if you don't include them costs?

EDF provided the kit & covered labour to remove the old boiler and install the air source pump, IIRC there was an allowance to improve the thermal performance of the properties (bascially loft & cavity wall insulation) but the amount required for these meant we'd have to put our own money in. Without the improvements then the properties would've either been cold/draughty or had to have the heat pumps on loads & therefore used loads of energy.

Go in to mcs website and look at local installers , HT energy have been around for a while now while the ‘double glazing salesy’ Have been and gone after trying to capitalise on any get rich schemes. Youl need someone decent to look after it so factor in Andy servicing etc .

Turning up a room stat 1 degree can cost 6-10% more in gas . If you do this on an ASHP the cost will be greater so it’s important to not mess with the controls especially when it’s unnecessary. ASHP are low temperature heat source so may just take longer to heat space from cold .
I’d have one but when it breaks down it’s best to have someone there ready to fix it and know the likely cost in advance .

I spoke to somebody from a company called Warm Future a few weeks ago. Was good and knew his tuff, said he wouldn't bother me and let me make my own mind up. Not heard from him since, left with message if want any more info you call me.

Said it would cost me £14k to install, (quote over phone based on info I gave him). There where a number of grants available to March 22 I think it was. The catch been I would have to pay the £14k up front and the grant would be paid back to me quarterly over the next 7 years. There was 2 types of grants and linked to RPI/CPI (can't remember which now) and would get around £13k wish back but would take a that time.

Thinks the quote is accurate but would need somebody to come around and survey, would involve in replacing all rad's. As mentioned above the idea is to have it running a lot but at a lower heat. and can be linked to solar power which would reduce bills further but obviously costs to get the panels.

Said as was gas heating would save me a little bit based on todays prices but this is likely to increase due to cost of gas , and desire to move away from it.
