He was probably the best left back I've ever seen play for the Boro.

The Boro didn't want to sell him. He turned his back on us, for guaranteed glory.

I felt sorry for him when he almost died because of his leg but have zero sympathy for him regrettung his decision to join the Mickey's.

Wasn't it Rick Parry (our Nemisis) who made the illegal approach while Zeige was on holiday with Dieter Hamann????

He was hands down the 'best' LB I've ever seen at Boro (I say 'best' as no George😂).

He was arguably the best left back in Europe before his injury. Quality with Germany. Then again we probably wouldn't have signed him if he hadn't been coming back from that injury.

A bit like Merson. Absolute quality but left under a cloud.

Yes I remember this, another occasion when we messed up a player's contract. The release clause was only supposed to be used if he got 'homesick' and wanted to get back to Germany.

Berti Vogts the Germany manager at the time was involved.

The case was settled out of court as we were threatening to put Gérard Houlier on the witness stand but he was in poor health at the time.

decent team we had that season - the likes of Ziege, Ince and Boksic brought a lot of class (well when Boksic could be bothered)

It's almost dream like that we once had the first choice German International Left Back and Boksic in the same starting 11.

Madness 😂

The out of court settlement will have been many millions of pounds. I was one of many called to give a witness statement about Ziege. It wasnt really a case of messing up a contract as it was confidential information. Liverpool knew they would lose so finally settled with us having lost several rounds of legal proceedings before the final court date.

Fairly sure Zeige left before Boksic played. Same close season one left, other joined I think. Zeige leaving was blamed for Robson's last season being so bad.

Yep, they never played in the same team. Do seem to recall one surreal game where we had a midfield three of Ince, Ziege and Juninho mind. Like a fantasy football line-up that one.

He wasn't really a left back either. He was a specialist wing back, and probably more suited to playing midfield than defence. Not sure if he ever played left back in a four for us? But Liverpool played him there and he struggled.

Mildly annoying him moving to Liverpool after we'd resurrected his career. But that's football.

What was more annoying was the tapping up and the leaking of his release fee which can only have come from Ziege or his agent. Not heard of any case like it, bit unusual but must've been a legally sound confidentiality clause given the amount we were awarded after taking them to court.
