Advice/recommendations on bicycles

Going to take advantage of the Governments Bike2Work scheme we have available at work and buy a bicycle, probably looking at an E-Bike - most likely a mountain e-bike so I can use it up the woods etc on weekends as well as cycling to work.

I've not owned a bicycle for a number of years now and I've just been looking on some sites and there's an enormous amount of options and it's a bit overwhelming.

Thinking of making an appointment at one of the local retailers before ordering one.

Anyone got any advice of what to avoid, or what to look out for?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated (y)

I got one about 10 years ago, the only advice I can give you is if your using roads/cycle paths to cycle to work get a hybrid or a smooth tyre bike . I bought a mountain bike and had to change the tyres as it was torture trying to ride on flat roads. I'm sure there is loads of options now mind. Also I'm sure you can get up to what you want to spend as it comes out of your bank every month. I got a bike for about £40 a month and I still have it.

How much can you spend using the B2W scheme 👀
That's the question I would ask too. I know you can get electric bikes for under £1000 but they are not really worth considering. An electric mountainbike will set you back much more even at the pretty poor entry point.

Not being flippant, but do you really need an electric bike eg are you old, infirm etc ?

If you're healthy don't get an ebike, your fitness will soon improve

If your doing roads and paths get a gravel bike, if it's roads get a road bike, if its woods get a MTB, you'll only regret getting a hybrid if you're going in the woods, trust me

Hard tail MTB and buy a second Wheelset off ebay with thin tyres on for work
Exactly this.

How far are you commuting to work on the bike and on what terrain?

Are you planning on using designated trails in the woods or are you looking at mountain bike trails?

I always find hybrid the worst of both worlds.

Gravel bikes are a great option and you can swap tyres to maximise Versatility.

Best gravel bikes under £1000

Thanks for feedback so far.

My commute to work on bike would probably be between 20-30 mins each way.

My initial thoughts on buying an E-Bike were from advice given from others who currently use them. Couple of my mates use their bikes every week and swear by them. They're quite fit and healthy too, being in their late 20s, early 30s, so I just took their advice, having never used an E-Bike before.
