Addicted to learning guitar.

Some of you may know I bought myself a guitar just over a month ago now. I needed a something to break up the day other than getting up, eating, watching TV, going for a walk and repeat.
I wish I'd stuck at learning when I was a kid, it's brilliant. I downloaded an app called Yousician after been recommended it by a friend and it's a superb learning tool.

Really enjoying playing along and learning with the app and looking forward to the days when I can play along with some of the harder more complex songs.

Any other guitar/bass players on the board?

I play the guitar. Have done for ages on and off. I have periods when I barely play and others where I go all in practicing and playing. It's a really absorbing thing to do 👍

Some days I've sat down with the intention of just playing a quick 10 minute lesson on the app and then 90 minutes later I'm still there with a numb bum and no concept of time.

Guitar is a great instrument but it is very difficult to master. Second only to the harp in difficulty. With a harp you can't put your foot on the monitor whilst working the thin end of the neck and a scrunched up face.

That's what I like the best. When you start playing and just get totally absorbed for ages just making stuff up.

You know I'm not even aiming to master it. I'll be quite happy to get to a level where I can just jam a little bit and play along with some songs and nail most of the chords.

You won’t be happy with that I’ll tell you 😁

I‘ve played forever, I think I’d be classed as intermediate, I’ve got a sense of timing like a knackered clock, whatever level you’re at you’re never quite as good as you want to be. And there’s always a new piece of tech to lust after. I might have said to you before, but JustinGuitar is a good resource online.

The key thing is to enjoy it and if you do it doesn’t matter a toss what king of racket you make.

Love playing my guitars. It becomes an addiction, and buying different types of guitars to play. Even though I have played for years, I admit that I am not as good as I want to be.
I learnt to play lots of different styles and love mixing it up on different instruments, love classical on an electric. Spanish on a six string bass, but mostly love my accoustic for some good finger picking.
Best thing I ever did was to teach my son, who now has gone into a career in music production.

Exactly mate.

I know I'll never reach a level the same as those who perform in front of audiences for example but like you said enjoying it is all that matters and I love it.

My eldest daughter (who's only four) has shown a keen interest in wanting to learn to play. Maybes will wait for another year or two before getting her lessons, you know what kids are like with attention spans. 🤣

My son was eight when he showed interest. But taught him from about 11/12. Bought him a cheap strat with bendy strings. He got on well with the size and in a few months was in a school battle of the bands contest. He was rubbish before that with any other hobbies as you say attention spans.

With both my kids bedtime routine was centered around books and stories, but I would occasionally get the guitar out and we would sing songs, often Beatles based as it was before the internet and it was the only music book I had. Surprisingly they still enjoy some of the songs when I get to see their playlists.

I've played for years and as above, you're never as good as you want to be. I played for ten years self-taught, had some lessons at that point which got me up a level, and since then I've plateaued at that level. I'm probably a low level intermediate, after over 20 years and having accumulated about 8 of the damn things! Competent with all chords and scales, can improvise a little and jam a bit, and love belting out a song on one of my acoustics and singing along to it. But when I started playing at 15 I always wanted to be like Eddie Van Halen, and I'm simply not :ROFLMAO:. The hardest thing is I have met people who are.

The most important thing is that you enjoy the time you do spend on it. I still pick up my guitar every day and whilst I'll never be like Eddie Van Halen, I can at least play the ****** a bit, most people can't. That's all that matters really. Noel Gallagher once said that as long as he can pick up his guitar and belt out Hey Jude once a day he will never need anything else (or words to that effect).

Wouldn't be at all surprised honestly.

As a kid I was brought up listening to 50's + 60's music, I've got loads on my playlists. One of my all time favourite bands is The Beach Boys.

I had a few aborted attempts to learn, but started again last year on an acoustic (already had an electric).

Thing for me is finding a platform that will make it interesting - was using Justin Guitar, but its hard to keep track of which lesson to do, as they don't tend to be in any relative order.

My son has just started learning too, which is great.

I'll definitely try Yousician though (y)

Yeah I play a bit. Bought myself a new Fender Jazzmaster six months ago, love it.

The best free guitar resource may be Justinguitar.com and tabs.ultimate-guitar.com

I've played all my life and would say just enjoy taking the time to play, to please yourself, it's so good for the soul at every standard.
I know I will never play this well, but my word, how good is this man. Enjoy.
Stunning
