A19 Hutton Henry junction.

Its a bad junction yes.

I can't get away with the whole cutting across a 70mph road concept. I know there isnt any other way other than installing hundreds of bridges etc but its always a recipe for disaster.

I cant help but feel worried that there may be a 80yr old waiting to pull out of one of these junctions whos reflexes and depth perception aint what they used to be. If some idiot is doing 100mph they dont stand a chance.

There are too many people who dont even know how to join at the correct speed from a slip road never mind cutting across 2 lanes of 70+mph traffic.

Im not having a dig at the elderly btw, there are plenty of competent elderly drivers. Its just that if i think about the last 5 times i was almost involved in a serious incident, most were due to an elderly driver (usually thinking that doing everything slow is somehow safer)

Would be interesting to know what caused the accident. But if it's a accident black spot then either close off and re-route to a fly over or build one like they had to on the A66 just past Elton turn-off. The quickest option would be an enforced speed restriction like they have on the A1, speed camera's and a speed reduction section.

Surely the quickest option is extension of the Armco barriers and close the gaps.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure where Hutton Henry was so google mapped it. Why on earth would you take a chance across 2 lanes of 70mph traffic when you can drive to station town and join easily north or southbound via a proper junction near Sheraton or castle Eden? Would only add a few minutes on any journey. Better late than dead on time.

Yes I did likewise after alanmoodysdog's suggestion. He's spot on, the inconvenience would be negligible if the gap were closed. They didn't think twice in closing the Black Swan gap on the A19, which was far more disruptive, and it was a few years before the bridge was built.

It wasn't just the Black Swan gap, it was also others as well I think.
Portable speed restriction signage and speed cameras could be put in overnight. Lots of cones, followed by a gang coming in to close off the crossing point. If there's the will, there's a way.

I’ve just measured it on google earth ( such is my covid enforced spare time ) and it’s 1.8 miles junction to castle Eden junction

My sister lives in Hutton Henry near to the A19 junction. When we visit we tend to drive the long way round through Wingate and come back on the A19 near Hart Village.

There should be no choice. Just close it. One thing I will say, as a driver who travelled to Nottingham every week for five years, this time of the year it can be very difficult driving South on the A19, A1, M1 on the morning. The sun is directly in your face and, if the road is wet, then the sun reflects off the road surface. I wonder how many crashes are caused by this in the Winter?

theres one further south from Castle Eden about 1/2 mile away from the Hutton henry junctions - goes to Station Town and Hartlepool - hutton henry is 1/4 mile from Station Town

Isn’t it peculiar how you slow down when you get older . I now wouldn’t dream of speeding and some might say it’s when you retire and time isn’t critical , but even before I retired I slowed right down .
I even sometimes wear my flat cap in the car just to annoy boy racers 🤭
Beware certain people on here have an aversion to flat caps on here ;-)
