A memory of Green Lane School

The Great Darkness - I was at St Mary's College at the time
I was in Whinney Banks infants, first year I think, in that big pre-fab type classroom. I remember hailstones the size of golfballs coming through the windows. I also remember that the teachers were scared. We were even told to get under our desks I think. I used to go home at dinner time and remember having to walk on wall tops because of deep water.

Yeah, there were a couple who frequently resorted to violence at Hustler. Funnily enough I knew them out of school (sailing club) and they were ace in that context ... but not to be messed with in the woodwork and metalwork room.

I do generally have fond memories of Green Lane actually. Especially the football team. And I met the lad who is now my oldest mate, and match going companion, at Green Lane. I think I moved over to Green Lane in second year. I still remember a lot of faces. I remember one popular teacher dying of cancer ... veryt sad. Mrs Widdowfield was very prim and proper. Mr Russell picked his nose through assemblies. A Miss Pinder had a disability caused by polio if I recall correctly. And there were some real characters, like the unforgettable Charles Agg.

I wonder how many of that team are no longer with us.
73/74 I think, if my maths is correct. Not sure there is an Alan on there ... though there are 3 or 4 that I can't name.

I had a great time at Green Lane, maybe a year or two after the some of the comments above. Loved playing in the green and white football kit. We had a decent team as I recall. Yes Mr Jardine did have a reputation, but I only ever heard about the cane used in his office, never in a classroom. I recall a teacher called Mr Mcardle who took the football team. Excellent teacher and really nice guy.

Just looked up the date. 2 July 1968.

I was at St Edward's. Was there for another 2 school years after than. Then a few years at St George's.

Then moved to St Mary's College. As it was just starting to change to be a 6 form college.

I think I was part of the last ever under 16 intake.

So you must be a bit older than me.

I had 3 elder brothers who went there before me.

Not sure whether the youngest one of the 3 might have been there the same time as you.

Seems the right time. I know he played in the team.
Looks like him front row second from the left unless you already know his name ?

Charles Agg is no longer with us, I believe.

Malcolm/George was the year above me.

You may be right. I went to Park End school and can't recall anybody receiving corporal punishment. Now secondary school, and in my case the High School, was a different kettle of fish with some sadistic B's amongst the teachers.

I think Park End school was probably the closest to me - I was despatched to Thorntree tho - me nannas both lived near the school.
It’s mad to think we did that we did that walk and return as under 8 year olds - unaccompanied.
No corporate punishment there - I waited until big school before feeling the cane

I lived on Premier Rd almost equidistant between Langbaurgh and St Anthonys

@Mwelolo that's rather sad. He was in my younger brother's year. A total one off eccentric. Quite hard to be that in Boro I should imagine.
He used to drive his imaginary car from his house about 300m from the school gates into school. Park it up. Then go into school, while dressed like a city stockbroker with suit, waistcoat, hat and watch fob.
He did get the **** taken out of him by other kids who didn't know any better, but he seemed to just rise above it all.

The school was still being built when I was 5, so I had to go to Lawson School in Doggie for the first year.
