A bit embarrassing for Wilder this morning then

Realistically, there has only been Tav who we have sold without a replacement - Spence was never going to play for us again. The rest of the players who left were short term, out of contracts.
Tav's head wouldn't have been 100%(understandable) and what if he broke his leg and was out for the season? Nah, can't blame Boro for anything. Unfortunate that Bournemouth didn't sign him in June, given us more time to get someone in, but such is life.

Could we have said to Bournemouth and Tavernier, yes we'll agree to the deal but first, we need to line up a replacement, then you can go?
With their PL money, they would sadly have been able to go out and get their second or third options: Tav was in an easily affordable price bracket for a PL club.

We'd be left without the money, they'd get someone else and Tav would be keen to move on.

Of course they're serious questions.. why should we allow our first team players to leave without a replacement when nobody else does.

I'd argue, with the players we've let go being key/important members of our squad, that it should be more difficult to get them out of our squad than it is to get Premier League outcasts out who are never going to play.

We weren't in a position to hold onto them waiting for a replacement as the money was too big for us to put on hold. Supply & Demand

Because we need the sale money to bring in replacements, so require this money in asap to allow us to establish targets and get deals over the line before window closes - the big clubs know this hence the timing of their bids

We’ve replaced Lumley with a better goalkeeper. Lenihan is an upgrade on Bamba. Giles is better than Taylor. Forss should contribute more than Connolly, Balogun et al. Smith is an upgrade on Peltier as it gives proper competition and cover to Jones.

Ameobi, Ikpeazu, Spence, Payero, Malley, Coulson, Hall, Olusanya, Stojanovic - none of them played, some were even out on loan in the second half of last season.

We need five players in according to Wilder. I’m certain he’ll get them. I’ve moaned myself this week, wondering where these players are etc, but maybe just be patient. Tav left because he wanted to leave and the money was an unexpected bonus. That may change the sort of player(s) we can now afford. Should we sign a player to fill a gap in panic or wait a fortnight for the right player at a slightly higher price? I don’t think the chairman would appoint this manager and then not back him. I could be wrong, but let’s wait and see.

We all have opinions on this sort of thing but let’s be completely honest, most of what we read on here about transfers is complete b*llocks. It’s Sky and the like turning a series of boring, often complex, enquiries and negotiations into entertainment. Life is much more complicated than that. Things take time. Deals that appeared to happen out of the blue years ago were probably in the offing for ages but we didn’t have the internet and 24hr rolling news channels.

Let’s just wait and see how things shape up in the next couple of weeks.

I’m sure CW is feeling a little bit peeved today. As said above he won’t have much to do with actual transfer negotiations but he’s the one who has to face the questions from reporters, an if he’s been told things were about to happen and then they haven’t it does make him look a little bit silly. I wonder who’ll be brave enough to ask him about transfers this morning 😁

He won't be embarrassed. He might be a bit annoyed, but we don't know the ins and outs of what's going on. Re: Larsen sounds like Groningen have messed us about a bit, not really the clubs fault.

No-one really knows who the other is/was but we're at the mercy of the selling club and because the idiots in charge of football have deemed it fit to leave the window open so late into the season, then many clubs are using it as an opportunity to try and get more for their players by dragging things out and hoping the buying club panic and throw more money at them or other clubs come in and start a bidding war.

Not the first time we've been victims of clubs changing their mind at the last minute and won't be the last. It's clearly a well established tactic. Very much like buying a house, you can't take anything for granted till everything is signed.

It's a bit of a game in itself and every club is trying to walk that fine line between getting players through the door as quickly as possible, whilst not being taken for mugs and paying vastly over the odds. Frustrating for everyone (apart from maybe people like Levy, who probably get a kick out of it) but as Mogga would say "it is what it is" until the governing bodies tighten the window.

So why did we release all our players before bringing in suitable replacements leaving our squad as thick as a fag paper?

So do you think the club would hold onto players, out of contact, for just one month into the season just in case? And why on Earth would said players agree to that?

We released them to free up wages or they wanted to move on.

We released ageing players that we didnt want on the wage bill this season or deem werent suited to the style, others returned to there parent club, we are governed by FFP and if we keep and buy in the hope someone still signs a player we could end up in breach of FFP, there is a risk in both factors, players you dont want still being here and being short of players if you release, the club are doing there best, can we not just do our bit in the hear and now go out and give anyone that wears our shirt our full support, the club will get signing of that am sure but it just hasnt turned arround as quick as we all would like and is pretty much the same for most other clubs!

I’m sure other championship clubs don’t sell players without a replacement lined up. Especially a few days before an important league game. Sugar coat it all you want, you don’t sell your starting players a few days before a game without a replacement when we are struggling for numbers as it is.
We are at the other end of the market to PL clubs, totally different scenarios.

We are in no position to reject reasonable offers for any of our players, especially ones who want to play in the PL.
We are though. We are led to believe we don’t need to sell players financially. Tavernier had two years left on his contract. It wasn’t now or never

No Championship club will be rejecting reasonable offers for player's that want to leave.

We are in no position to miss out on income while we wait for other players to be freed up and having the funds available now puts is in a stronger position to negotiate terms for players in other positions we need to fill more urgently.

Being financially stable is completely different to being financially competitive, and due to FFP, we need to sell to be the later.

I agree with him on one thing - I'd prefer the deadline for signings to be the start of the season. Or just go back to the previous system of only one deadline - whether that be January/February/March or whatever

We were naive to sell Tavernier, just after letting Payero leave on loan which left us short for the opening game. A week later and nothing has changed.

Seems like we’re one of the few clubs happy to let players go without already having a replacement, or at least one in the bag - and we have a thread bare squad to boot !

Tremendous post 👍🏻

Naive? A PL club offered a great price for a player that then wanted to leave.

The only naivety here is thinking we are in a position to tell other clubs to wait while we buy/loan a replacement, we are very clearly not.

If a club came in today and offered £15million each for Fry and Jones, they would be sold just the same. It's the nature of being a Championship club without the benefits of parachute payments.

Even with that money, we would still be waiting on targets being allowed to leave their clubs, unless we start offering around stupid money for average players which is why we are in this position in the first place.
