UPDATED: Moved the rules to a separate post.

Otto42 has stepped forward to provide input for the next Boro quiz we are running in lock down. Thanks to him for doing that. Also, thanks to Erimus74 for his input into the last 2 quizzes.

The subject for the quiz will be trying to guess Otto42's favourite "home ish" matches.

There will be 9 rounds of the quiz. With each round covering a period of approximately 5 years from the mid 70s onwards.

We want to limit the range of matches to keep it around the 100-120 matches to choose from per round of the quiz. If we were to include away matches it would be well over 200 each round. Also, if we fancy, we can always run an away match version of the quiz later.

As mentioned above we will be splitting the period from the mid-70s through to 2020 into roughly 5 year chunks.

"Here goes for some intro. I'm 50 and my first game was in October 76 against West Brom, won one nil and went top of the league...all downhill since. Went to most home games 83 to 87, then went to university. Had a season ticket during the 90s, before moving south and family started to take some of my attention away from the Boro. Loved the Rioch years and lived the Robbo rollercoaster. Think Steve McLaren (and Karanka to a lesser extent) get an unfair bad press from some Boro fans! "

So I suggest that you start having a think about matches between 1976 and around 1980 for the first round of the quiz.

OK. Otto42 and myself have agreed the rules for the quiz. I will look to type them up in a separate post in the next 1/2 hour or so. So it is all in one place.

So the new quiz will start today.

RULES

The subject for the quiz will be trying to guess Otto42's favourite "home-ish" matches.

"Home-ish" is defined as follows: Competitive first team games, excluding testimonials and friendlies. Including cup finals and semi-finals played on neutral grounds.

There will be 9 rounds of the quiz. With most rounds covering a period of 6 years from the mid 70s onwards. The periods will be based on seasons rather than calendar years.

The exception is the first round of the quiz. That one will cover a shorter period as it starts with the season Otto42 went to his first match.

The periods will be as follows:

Round 1 - 1976/77 season up to 1979/80 season

Round 2 - 1980/81 season up to 1984/85 season

Round 3 - 1985/86 season up to 1989/90 season

Round 4 - 1990/91 season up to 1994/95 season

Round 5 - 1995/96 season up to 1999/2000 season

Round 6 - 2000/01 season up to 2004/05 season

Round 7 - 2005/06 season up to 2009/10 season

Round 8 - 2010/11 season up to 2014/15 season

Round 9 - 2015/16 season up to 2019/20 season

Just as a reminder here is the intro from Otto42 again:

"Here goes for some intro. I'm 50 and my first game was in October 76 against West Brom, won one nil and went top of the league...all downhill since. Went to most home games 83 to 87, then went to university. Had a season ticket during the 90s, before moving south and family started to take some of my attention away from the Boro. Loved the Rioch years and lived the Robbo rollercoaster. Think Steve McLaren (and Karanka to a lesser extent) get an unfair bad press from some Boro fans! "

The scoring system for each round will be the same as the first 11 rounds of the most recent Erimus74 quiz. You make 3 guesses each day. You score between 4 & 1 points. Depending on whether you have guessed the correct match and if yes, where it is in your list of 3 matches.

The timing will be similar to the last quiz. We will close each round at 13:00 UK time. With results published and the next round launched an hour or two after that (depending on how busy Otto42 and myself are that day).

Round 1 is underway:

Round 1 - 1976/77 season up to 1979/80 season

No blank chart of scores yet. As I have yet to start work on the spreadsheet. I will publish it here when it is ready.

Back now from my bike ride........

Can I start.....................................

Of course you can. Looking forward to it. Your 3 guesses in priority order please.

It will be very interesting to see whether you pick Otto42's favourite.

1st - Ottos 1st xams Boro 27th December 1976 Boro 3 Villa 2, David Mills & Ottos 1st Boro hattricks
Boro battered Villa in a one way 1st half & going in 3-1 up, unfortunatly the half time whistle blew & typical Boro came out for the 2nd half

2nd - 26th Feb 1977Boro 4 Arsenal 1 FAC 5th round, David Mills with his & Otto's 2nd hattrick, one of my favourite cup matches & hopefully Ottos too

3rd - 28th January 1978 Boro 3 Everton 2, FAC 4th round, we again battered em until Duncan McKenzie came on when we were winning 3-0, i'm almost certain it was Craig Johnstons debut

I'm buzzing now all this remanicing (y)

Good stuff. What year was the 2nd one?

Wiki said it was Johnston's debut at age 17. I seem to remember a story about him practicing in the club car park. As he used to park the cars for the players. There is a great big long story about him somewhere. He has had an incredible life.

Yes the Boro complete record & googling Boro v Everton 11v11 has Tony McAndrew No10, without checking through my stuff I'm almost 100% certain CJ played No10

Google was my friend with this...

1. Dec 16 1978 7-2 win against Chelsea
2. 26 Feb 1977 4-1 cup win against Arsenal (one of Erimus74's picks)
3. 23 Oct 1976 1-0 win against West Brom. (Only picked it as it was Otto42's first game - thought that might swing it for him)

Was studying for my A-levels in 76/77. Went to university in London in autumn 77. So did not see that many home games from then on.

I promise I am not copying, but you might want to cover your keyboards when you type :D

1. 16 Dec 78 Boro 7 v 2 Chelsea. Coming from behind, Boro suddenly ignited after Osgood scored and we battered Chelsea who had Danny Blanchflower take over as their new manager. Mickey Burns was on fire with 4 goals,

2. 26 Feb 77 Boro 4 v 1 Arsenal. I was sat behind the East stand goal, Millsy was on fire here with 3 and Spike the other scorer. I thought we could beat anyone, even Liverpool up next

3. 19 May 80. Boro 5 v 0 Arsenal. Last game of the season, Spike with another brace with Shearer, Johnston and Hodgy completing the rout. Signed off in style and Otto will have gone home a very happy bunny for the summer season.

I originally had my 3rd as below, but later realised Otto is a few years younger so aged around 7 at the time the Utd game took place so I guess his mum may have objected to him going to this evening classic. I will kick myself if he went to it though as if i knew it would have been my 3rd. I will leave it for Otto to read my initial thought anyhow.

3. 26 Apr 77 Boro 3 v 0 Man Utd, under the lights, another Spike with a brace and Millsy show, smashing Utd is always a joy for any kid, they had just reached the FA cup final too and The Doc put a strong team out but the mighty Boro brought them crashing back down to earth.First time Otto will have seen us play Man Utd possibly too. Always a joy at school winding up the kids supporting Man U, he will have enjoyed the next schoolday.

You could always edit erimus74, we wont cry foul ...... honest :sneaky:

I toyed with the 5-0 v Arsenal and the 4-0 Hereford too As well as the boxing day game. Worried about the night game and otto’s age at the time. He might not have gone, so might yet edit
