9 day quiz - FINAL RESULTS published - Otto42's favourite matches (mid 1970s to 2020)

Apologies for the delay in publishing the results. I got sidetracked on another thread. I felt I had to produce a chart of rainfall stats for the south coast of Spain.

We are off. Here are the words about the first day results from Otto42:

"76/77 was a good time to start going we always seemed to be in the top half of the league or doing reasonably well in the FA Cup, always thought that elusive first honour or cup final was just round the corner, so some great games to pick from. Just missing the cut are my first FA Cup game v Hereford, 4-0 win and sat in posher seats with a mate of my dad's, Everton FA Cup 4th round from 1978, we battered a top side to go three nil up and were then hanging on for 3-2 in the end, the 7-2 v Chelsea and John Neal's first game a one all v European Champions Liverpool with Dalglish making his debut...loads of plastic scousers at school and always good to keep em quiet.

So in reverse order

(3) Boro 2 Norwich 0, October 1978. Mesemerised by Terry Cochrane my favourite player in those early days. Proper old fashioned winger without shinpads and socks rolled down!
(2) Boro 4 Arsenal 1, FA Cup 5th Round 1977. Mills hat trick, my first proper big game atmosphere, terrifying and electrifying in equal measures and looked like we could win the Cup. Unfortunately drew Liverpool away next round.
(1) Boro 1 West Brom 0, my first game and Bernard Gent announcing at the end we were back on top of the league. Was hooked."

I was the only person to take a hint from the intro by Otto42.

I am liking this new quiz. Not only am I top of the league. I am also above Erimus74. That is my main target for this quiz.

As you can see, we are jumping to round 4 tomorrow. So the period from the summer of 1990 to the spring of 1995.

Back to the normal closing time for entries tomorrow. 13:00 UK time (14:00 Spanish time) on Friday 1 May 2020. So that means I will have less time to do the morning and early afternoon chores. The Guardian quick crossword, the New York Times hard sudoku, publishing a couple of posts on my blog about the town and Spain in general. Mirroring some of the posts from the blog onto here etc. It is a hard life.

Best of luck to you all in the next round.
14th October 1978 Boro 2 Norwich 0, my 18th birthday & Boro's 1st home win of the season, magic TC

I am going to jump in today and give my answers for summer 1990 to spring 1995.

1. Last game at Ayresome Park. 2-1 win against Luton. 30 April 1995 (15 years ago today). Clinched the title.

2. 3 March 1995 vs Bristol City 3-0 - Fuchs hat trick

3. 4-1 win against Leeds 22 August 1992.
I thought Spain was an hour ahead - not ten years behind (that leaves the possibility of a good few quips)😂

Talk of Boro clinching the title it was at Stoke a few days later when Bolton only drew with them. I was at Keele Uni at the time and went to the game. I think I was the only happy person in the ground at full time. Remember Shilton coming on as a sub as Bolton's keeper got sent off and his first touch was picking the ball out of the net

30 april 1995 v luton 2-1 .... sad day for alanmoodys dog - hope Otto got there
22 august 1992 v leeds 4-1....2nd home game in the premier - just beaten man city 2-0 and now the previous seasons champions - what could go wrong
13th October 1990 - v millwall 2-0 THAT hendrie goal - still remember him racing up the wing from my seat in the North Terrace seats go on - go on- go on....GOAL

Okay I am enjoying this quiz very much already. I like the idea that we cannot second-guess autos choices of his favourite games not least because it’s a personal feeling and he’s not just choosing the three best results from the season windows. Therefore the best I can come up with is the three I most enjoyed during the period in question and they are as follows number one

1.Middlesbrough 4 Leeds United 1. What a game this was the newly crowned English champions with Cantona in their ranks swaggering into newly promoted Boro's backyard and played off the park.

2. Middlesbrough 2 Luton Town 1 Final League game with Hendrie inspirational.

3 Middlesbrough 6 Leicester City 0

30 April 1995. Boro 2 v 1 Luton, What a day, happy, sad, every emotion, good and bad. As I walked away and had one last look back, It was like saying goodbye to a loved one. I still miss AP to this day. I have spent more time at the Riverside now, but it has never evoked the same passions AP did for some reason, maybe its an age thing.

22 Aug 1992. Boro 4 v 1 Leeds. My mate is a Leeds fan and I made a special journey to enrol him and his lad in the membership scheme that was running at the time so they could sit with us. Oh the joy, the satisfaction of that game was heightened as all the pre match banter had played out in the car on the journey up. Going home I drove slowly :D. Special mentions for Wright, Hendrie Wilkinson, but a superb display from Ian Ironside In goal. A fantastic all round team performance. Cantona....... who are ya.

19 Aug 1992 Boro 2 v 0 Man City. First home game in the inaugural Premier league. A proud moment at that time. Evening games were always special at AP. Boro were back it felt really special. We had lost our opening game and needed to get some points on the board. A quick fire double from Bernie settled the nerves It helped Quinn getting sent off soon after though but I thought, yes, we will be fine In this league. (Sadly, the now infamous Boro post Christmas slump was to rear its ugly head)
