9 day quiz - FINAL RESULTS published - Otto42's favourite matches (mid 1970s to 2020)

I promise I am not copying, but you might want to cover your keyboards when you type :D

1. 16 Dec 78 Boro 7 v 2 Chelsea. Coming from behind, Boro suddenly ignited after Osgood scored and we battered Chelsea who had Danny Blanchflower take over as their new manager. Mickey Burns was on fire with 4 goals,

2. 26 Feb 77 Boro 4 v 1 Arsenal. I was sat behind the East stand goal, Millsy was on fire here with 3 and Spike the other scorer. I thought we could beat anyone, even Liverpool up next

3. 19 May 80. Boro 5 v 0 Arsenal. Last game of the season, Spike with another brace with Shearer, Johnston and Hodgy completing the rout. Signed off in style and Otto will have gone home a very happy bunny for the summer season.

I originally had my 3rd as below, but later realised Otto is a few years younger so aged around 7 at the time the Utd game took place so I guess his mum may have objected to him going to this evening classic. I will kick myself if he went to it though as if i knew it would have been my 3rd. I will leave it for Otto to read my initial thought anyhow.

3. 26 Apr 77 Boro 3 v 0 Man Utd, under the lights, another Spike with a brace and Millsy show, smashing Utd is always a joy for any kid, they had just reached the FA cup final too and The Doc put a strong team out but the mighty Boro brought them crashing back down to earth.First time Otto will have seen us play Man Utd possibly too. Always a joy at school winding up the kids supporting Man U, he will have enjoyed the next schoolday.
coluka, I always remember that man utd game with fondness, stood with my younger brother in the Holgate, very warm evening, was it a Friday game, we battered them & thinking how good we are, looking back Tommy Doc, must have said, just go through the motions, no silly injuries

In date order

Feb 1977 - Middlesbrough 4 Arsenal 1 Mills Hattrick. FA Cup

April 1977 - Middlesbrough 3 Man United 0. Ripped them apart

Dec 1978 - Middlesbrough 7 Chelsea 2 Micky Burns 4

Have not put the Arsenal 5-0 game in. It was the last game of the season and there wasn't much on the game and Arsenal didn't look bothered I recall from early on in that match.

1 Boro 5 Arsenal 0
2 Boro 3 Man Utd 0
3 Boro 3 Man City 0 August 79,Malcolm Allison brought his City team to Ayresome with a couple of exotic, for the time ,foreigners, plus Tommy Caton and Steve McKenzie who Big Mal regarded as exciting teenagers and we tore them to pieces .

Good quiz this one. Otto presumably will remember the games so far back with the results as much as the performances. That 3-0 Man City game referred to above sticks out as an absolute belter and would be in my top 3 as would that Man U game on a Friday night when we stuffed them 3-0 but

1. Middlesbrough 7 Chelsea 2

2. Middlesbrough 4 Arsenal 1 FA Cup

3. Middlesbrough 5 Arsenal 0

You can change the order if you think you might get more points that way!

I'll join when you get to round 4, cant comment on what I havent seen
Please note that I plan to bounce around between time periods. In a similar way to what I did with playing positions. The next round will probably be one that you know about. As I will pick a later period.

I am going to have to use google to help me. As I have been away from the Boro for so long. I was open about this in my first answer.

So maybe you should use a combination of Google and cribbing some answers in the rounds that you were not old enough for. Then use your own knowledge in the more recent rounds?

Ditto for anyone else considering taking part.

It is only a bit of fun.

Dec 1978 Boro v Chelsea 7-2- one of the great games (and still my dad managed to have a whinge during the game how are we losing to this lot they are crap he said )

October 1976 Boro v West Brom 1-0 - you never forget your first game + also was it the last time we were officially top of the league after everybody had played?

August 1979 Boro v Manchester City 3-0 - I personally thought this was the high point in the John Neal reign as we completely outclassed City and after winning at Spurs on opening day, I really thought that this was going to be our year to qualify for Europe, The Arsenal game was a good result at the end of the season but was played in front of a fairly small crowd as we had blown the chance of Europe after a disasterous April, so this game has always felt like a let down or typical Boro moment. My main memory from the game was the juniors parading their trophies.

I am going to announce the topic for round 2 of the quiz not long after 13:00 UK time today.

Normally the cut off time for getting your answers in to the current round is also 13:00.

Today, for one day only, I am going to announce the day 1 results after 16:00. To give any stragglers the opportunity to join the first round of the quiz at the last minute.

That thought never crossed my mind Erimus74. You have just grabbed the lovingly treasured memories from a 16 yr old youth and crushed them brutally with no mercy  :cry::cry:

26 april 1977 v manure 3-0 blew them away
16 december 1978 v chelsea 7-2 against a very good chelsea team as well
28 december 1979 v leeds 3-1 crimbo leeds wins and we dominated

Here is the sneak preview of the question for day 2....

R4. 1990-1995 covers five seasons: 1990/91; 1991/92; 1992/93; 1993/94; 1994/95. First team home matches in the league and cups. Plus cup finals and semi-finals on neutral grounds.

As mentioned above, I will publish the day 1 results after 16:00 UK time today.

Apologies for the delay in publishing the results. I got sidetracked on another thread. I felt I had to produce a chart of rainfall stats for the south coast of Spain.

UPDATED: SORRY FOR THE MISTAKE IN SCORING - Apologies to junos_boots - I missed that he had the correct match in 2nd place. I have updated the league table and blurb.

We are off. Here are the words about the first day results from Otto42:

"76/77 was a good time to start going we always seemed to be in the top half of the league or doing reasonably well in the FA Cup, always thought that elusive first honour or cup final was just round the corner, so some great games to pick from. Just missing the cut are my first FA Cup game v Hereford, 4-0 win and sat in posher seats with a mate of my dad's, Everton FA Cup 4th round from 1978, we battered a top side to go three nil up and were then hanging on for 3-2 in the end, the 7-2 v Chelsea and John Neal's first game a one all v European Champions Liverpool with Dalglish making his debut...loads of plastic scousers at school and always good to keep em quiet.

So in reverse order

(3) Boro 2 Norwich 0, October 1978. Mesemerised by Terry Cochrane my favourite player in those early days. Proper old fashioned winger without shinpads and socks rolled down!
(2) Boro 4 Arsenal 1, FA Cup 5th Round 1977. Mills hat trick, my first proper big game atmosphere, terrifying and electrifying in equal measures and looked like we could win the Cup. Unfortunately drew Liverpool away next round.
(1) Boro 1 West Brom 0, my first game and Bernard Gent announcing at the end we were back on top of the league. Was hooked."

I was the 2nd of only 2 people to take a hint from the intro by Otto42. So junos_boots is top with me second.

I am liking this new quiz. Not only am I close to the top of the league. I am also above Erimus74. That is my main target for this quiz.

As you can see, we are jumping to round 4 tomorrow. So the period from the summer of 1990 to the spring of 1995.

Back to the normal closing time for entries tomorrow. 13:00 UK time (14:00 Spanish time) on Friday 1 May 2020. So that means I will have less time to do the morning and early afternoon chores. The Guardian quick crossword, the New York Times hard sudoku, publishing a couple of posts on my blog about the town and Spain in general. Mirroring some of the posts from the blog onto here etc. It is a hard life.

Best of luck to you all in the next round.
