67% of fans think that VAR makes football less enjoyable

It seemed such a good idea having all the latest technology to sort things out and get a judgement when the on field ref might be a bit dodgy, but really it just means that after a delay an off field ref makes a judgement which at times is just as suspect as the original opinion - not really worth the wait. 😐

I don’t mind VAR at all, it’s definitely not perfect and I don’t think that the Premier League could have implemented it any worse than they have, it’s actually quite impressive just how poorly they’ve gone about it.

But more decisions are correct than ever before, it doesn’t bother me waiting 2 minutes for a decision nor does it bother me when a goal is ruled out. Maybe it’s because I watch the NFL more than I watch football now so I’m used to it?

I do think that pundits on TV wind people up about it a lot more than they should and then people repeat the same stuff. Jeff Stelling rants about it on a weekly basis when it seems like he doesn’t even understand the rules, that’s a problem for me.

If they were to get rid of VAR then I hope no one complains about refs anymore and I hope Sky stop showing replays in slow motion or pausing an image to rant on about a linesman getting a decision wrong.

Where do you start with VAR?

One, it is still subjective despite all the law changes to accommodate it and the technology being used. For me, I'd rather have that subjectivity without VAR and the impact it has on the game for supporters in the stadium. If football was played exclusively in front of a TV audience then I might begrudgingly accept VAR, but it is ruining it for the paying fans.

Point two, it is creating a two tier system of games with it and the rest without. Use it in standalone tournaments by all means, but unless it can be used in all games then it's a no-no from me. How can you not have it at the Shrewsbury Vs Liverpool game and have it in the Liverpool Vs Shrewsbury replay?

It's interesting in the Rugby TMO, where the officials running the TMO know the answer before the ref asks the question. Then they provide guidance, with everyone in the stadium seeing the same thing, for the ref to make the decision.

It's definitely killing the excitement for the fans.

I agree with NES when he said it is wrong that opposition fans are celebrating a 'non goal' just as much as a goal.

As I mentioned in my post over here the ref makes the final decision. On every decision made at our home ground the ref comes to the half way line. He then views the evidence himself. After that he announces his decision.

"Clear and obvious" - none of this drawing parallel lines on a screen and scrutinising different angles for 2 minutes to see if someone's nose is offside.

Maybe the reason I dislike VAR so much is that I find the NFL completely stultifying with all its stoppages.

"Clear and obvious" doesn't apply to offside, never has done. Don't know why people keep repeating it. Offside is offside.

The problem is offside should favour the attacker. In order to avoid being offside by, for example, 1cm, staying level isn't good enough now. In that sense, VAR now favours defenders and this shouldn't be the case?

I may be wrong and will accept being corrected, but VAR doesn't seem to be in action in tonight's Spurs vs Saints replay and yet it was in the original tie. This goes back to my point from last night about it not being applied in all games creating an imbalance.

It will 100% have been in use.
They're both PL teams.

Even though I wanted Spurs to win, I think Son dived to win that penalty.

Twitter seems to be awash with Southampton fans questioning the penalty, some even saying the VAR check took 3 seconds. Call me cynical, but if it was in use I'd have expected it to have been mentioned during the commentary.

THE OFFICIALS

Referee: David Coote
Assistants: Lee Betts, Simon Bennett
Fourth official: Jarred Gillett
VAR: Stuart Attwell
Assistant VAR: Marc Perry

No wonder VAR never got involved if Atwell was the official.

I really can't see how there was no mention of it over the winning penalty given the endless delays that have become commonplace since its introduction. I'm all for binning it off, but even I'm suspicious when it goes from being clunky and drawn out to almost instantaneous overnight.

IFAB have stated that it should do and it absolutely needs to.

This is correct.

We're also seeing passages of false play. The linesman doesn't flag because he isn't certain. We all think he's offside. We're not really sure. We half heartedly jump up and down when the ball hits the back of the net.

I will moan and complain when referees get things wrong all I like when they finally kill the monster. I like a good moan. I think most people do. It's cathartic. But I've got enough about me to know that things will even themselves out eventually. I don't carry that particular chip around on my shoulder.

If you've ever been to a non league game it half the crowd go to moan at the ref.

VAR is a foul vampire sucking the joy out of the game. If you want VAR go and watch the rugby.
