55 years ago Boro 4 Oxford 1

Brings back great memories of how we used to live and consume our news, which was for many the daily newspaper, and perhaps tune-in the the radio [BBC Radio 2] and if you could afford a TV back then [lucky you] perhaps you could get Sportsnight with Coleman.

I was one of those unfortunately locked out, this was my first season going regularly and I only missed one other home game that season.

Played the wag from school. Joined the queue for the Holgate at 2.00 is, was not at the front!
This match was a culmination of a great end to the season
On the 15th April we were 7th in the table 5points behind 2nd place. We lost our 3rd game in a row against Walsall. They had to leave the pitch before the kick off to change their red shorts. An omen.
We then went on to win 5 and draw 1 in our last six games t o earn promotion with Bournemouth.
Was on the pitch at the end..... thankfully didn't get a lifetime ban.

I wasn’t allowed to go by my parents - they thought it might be a bit too crowded for a 9 year old, and they were probably right! The match before against Peterborough was my first ever match. Someone’s Dad got me a piece of shirt as a memento from the Oxford game - it was about a square inch!

I was also at the game. Later the club tried to either put the ball on display/give it to O'Rourke (can't quite remember what), but it wasn't THE ball.

I actually saw it going up the stairs on the Y bus at the Borough Road stop the night of the match.

"I've got the winner, says Harry" was a headline in the Gazette a few days later. Accompanied by a photo of Harry McCarthy of Brambles Farm with THE match ball.

Brilliant night, If It were possible to zoom in like todays photos, I could probably see myself in the gap between the keeper and the post for Johns in off header.

At the previous home game (Peterborough?), I think the guy in a white coat, on a podium, was there, leading some singing........he always did it at Wembley on FA Cup final day.
(Or was my dad winding me up with that tale?) 🤔
