50k Italian restaurants to open against lockdown rules

Even as a dedicated Americophile, I think it's one of those ridiculous things that have come across the pond and being accepted in British culture.
I saw an article about the person who unintentionally started the whole thing by doing a daft thing to reveal the gender of their baby to distant relatives. Basically they said they regretted it and think it's awful.

From what I can see there is a world of difference between 50,000 places opening and being fully booked and what actually happened, which was someone starting a Twitter campaign and a relatively tiny amount of establishments actually joining the campaign and very very few people going to the restaurants and bars.
