5 years sober today…

I am 2 days sober. It is something I have thought about a few times, quitting completely. It seems a waste of money, but on the other hand I do enjoy the occassional beer off a weekend and a bit of football down t' pub with the lads.

That’s reasonable. It’s when it starts drinking you problems begin and escalate, quickly.

Well done mate.

I’m attempting to knock it on the head as well.

Decided in July last year that I’d been playing the fool to alcohol for too long and decided to do a bit of research, read a few books and since then, apart from one or two hiccups, have managed to cut down significantly. My aim is to take it one week at a time at the minute.

Yeah I get that, but after I have spent 30 quid down the pub, I always wonder if the decompression it provides is worth it. Like most folks I work hard and my only 2 indulgencies are once a week down the pub and my car.

The third indulgence is more my wife and daughters enjoyment of eating out.

I did stop for about a year when I was younger as I was drinking too regularly. So hats off to anyone who can turn that particular tap off.

Playing the fool to alcohol is a great phrase.

Currently on a break myself which is running at 3yrs in mid March. I had previously used lent as an alcohol break period of about 6.5 weeks quite a few times. It also helps if it coincides with not that many celebratory events like birthdays or anniversaries as the temptation to fall is not frequent. One of the best things I got back and had forgotten I'd lost was dreams. Each time I gave up , within a month was falling into much deeper sleeps and much welcome dreams

I think the first of each occasion is the toughest. First sober birthday, Christmas, New Year. After that, when you realise it’s still enjoyable without the booze, it gets easier.

My main problem is how to deal with people who oppose your decision to go out and not drink. I don’t have an issue with simply telling them how it is, but I’m getting sick of it constantly being challenged.
I can imagine. The one thing I don't understand is why it bothers the drinkers so much. My wife doesn't drive so if we go to "parties" weddings birthdays, that kind of thing, I have to drive. I always get the same thing, "a couple won't hurt". Why do they care?

My experience is that those who are most bothered are the ones that have a problem themselves. They don’t want that light shined back at them by us sticking to our guns when they can’t or won’t.
