5 days freedom for Christmas

Britain's top police officer has 'no interest in interrupting Christmas dinners to catch rule breakers'

Amid reports Britons could be allowed "three or five" days to socialise with a number of other households in groups larger than six, Met Police commissioner Dame Cressida d*ck has said she does not want officers knocking on doors to catch people breaking the rules on Christmas Day.

Speaking during an LBC radio phone-in this morning, Dame Cressida said the force will "work with whatever the government say are the current restrictions".

But when asked whether her officers would "bang on the door and count the number of people eating the turkey" during the festive period, she said police do not have the authority to enter people's homes to enforce coronavirus legislation.

"We have no powers of entry," she said.

"I have no intention in any way of encouraging my people to be barging through people's doors or knocking on people's doors unless you've got, as we sometimes do - and then they can't barge, they may knock - a huge party going on, which is clearly very, very dangerous and causing lots of concern with the neighbours.

"Well then we might be knocking on the door saying, 'you need to stop this'."

So what do we expect the police to do?

I'm looking more like a no, I think we've decided a small family Christmas, just me, wife and kids. Not worth the risk.

Feel sad for the kids who won't see Grandparents who they absolutely adore this year, but we think it's for the best. We'll visit when we're able. We've only seen family once since February which was a very short visit in early August.

Well I’ll rest my case . Have yourselves a very merry Christmas 🤐
I guess this is aimed at my previous post.

Let's get one thing straight, I believe that social distancing, wearing a mask and above all using common sense are the biggest factors in trying to combat this disease until we get the vaccine roll out.

What I'm getting really tired of is the growing number of people making snide comments or posting pictures all over social media about other people doing activities that are actually ok under the current restrictions.

It is being fuelled by the hysterical MSM and even more worryingly by people like the SAGE member yesterday with his comments about seeing your family at Xmas and burying them in January.

It's like Lord of the Flies at the moment with a good dollop of Stasi.

Certainly didn’t mean to vilify your post . You’re second paragraph is the essence of what I was referring to insofar as lots of people aren’t observing those practises .

Hand on heart, I don't know a single person who doesn't wear a mask and keep distance. I presume they are also washing their hands.

There really isn't much else anyone can do at the moment, given that everything is shut. But people going to beaches and parks is absolutely fair game in my book.

How many of you saying no thanks live alone or away from family and friends you haven’t seen since the summer?

Last Monday there were no parking spaces at Stewart Park in Boro . We are informed we can go out and exercise but I certainly wouldn’t go near a packed area when its not hard to find open spaces where most of us live .
Stewart Park has been rammed every time I’ve been past. Went past on my bike on Monday and was going to go in but thought better of it.

It's just a poisoned chalice. There isn't a right answer, solution or get out. Listen to the science an put a finger in the air!

he unfortunate truth is no matter what the Government say about Christmas there will be a lockdown in January or February regardless.

Mother fuckin Shipton

I don't see how anyone would want this? How many businesses will go under whilst closed for a another month or jobs lost? It's f*cking Christmas... Its nothing special unless you're a young kid who believes in santa (sorry for the spoiler🎅😂).

You do realise that pretty much the whole hospitality business rely on December takings to see them through Jan/Feb the next year.

So plenty will go under.
There is not going to be any office parties anyway so the “must be open at Christmas” isnt goung to be as important . If it is a question of keeping pubs open for revellers to cause potential issues then the Government can organise a week of merriment drinking eating and celebrating after the vaccine has been issued. Call it Say Easter? Offices can have their parties etc. then.

The trade off and risk is not worth it, imagine having grandparents and grandkids together round the table and shortly after a grandparent getting ill and dying from COVID, would they say it was worth it???? Need to get real, this year is just going to be different in many ways.

People go on like Covid is the only killer.

The old and vulnerable might not see another Christmas regardless of the current situation. A lot of them have had an extremely lonely year and Christmas may give them a massive lift.

It isn't as black and white as some people seem to think.

Several vaccines are going to be available soon - why throw away all the progress we are making during this current "lock down"? We can all meet up with our families and loved ones when we've all been vaccinated. Exercise a bit of patience. Is a pee-up worth the death of a few mates or family, just because it's Christmas?
I'll drink to that 👍

In this diverse society in which we live, I’m surprised there isn’t any kick back about favouritism to a Christian festival?

We are opening up on the 2nd no matter what due to shops / gyms and hospitality needing the Xmas revenue.

We are also pretty much going back into lockdown in Jan. So the government are just 'sweeting' the deal by letting us have 5 days of normality that frankly most people would do anyhow.

It's not doing us a favour. It's so everyone doesn't go into meltdown over another lockdown in Jan. I get if you have young children then Xmas is massive.

I'm sure must adults could do without it for the sake of 5 days to lockdown for a month😕

Just seems like another disaster waiting to happen once again. High infection rates and allowing 4 families to mix indoors, putting the elderly at risk when they may have a vaccine a few weeks after christmas, why on earth would anyone think this is a good idea. People have made sacrifices on an unprecedented scale over the last 9 months, why throw that away for the sake of waiting a few weeks for some
