41% of children in Redcar now in poverty

On the other thread about voting for Johnson so claim Labour forgot about the North East.

These figures released today are a consequence of austerity and show what the Tory Party really think of this region. Levelling up is a total myth which will not even began to reverse the damage caused by the Tories in 12 years.

50.7% in Middlesbrough.

Good old Boris.

Hopefully Jacob Young is voted out in the next few years, he can focus on tweeting and posting about Brexit constantly without the distraction of being an MP.

I was in redcar yesterday for the 1st time in years. As my wife said " this place voted tory?!?!?."
From the life boat station to pacittos, Empty.
Most of the high street empty.
Nice little section of "new" shops , no doubt all ex of the high Street.

You might have seen me and my mate, we were sat in one of the sea front shelters yesterday afternoon, hiding from the sun and eating chips!

Not one comment from our political leaders, all of which are either Tory or are one of the Tory "Independent" friends.

Would be keen to get the thoughts of some of the Tory voters on here about this…..

Truly terrifying numbers, even worse when you realise we actually voted for this to continue

They'll deny it. "I have friends who live there and it's not true", "It's made up by Labour" etc etc.

I am not remotely a Tory but it's important to show what the numbers show and don't show. They're a measure of relative, not absolute poverty. They define child poverty as children living in households with less than 60% of median household income. This means that you could double each household's income and it would make no difference to 'poverty'.
It doesn't show whether these families can feed and clothe their children - absolute poverty. It describes how the North East compares to the other regions but not how much families can afford to buy. It's more an indicator of inequality and who is at the bottom of the list.

Not condoning the Tories I hate them with a passion but the MPs in the region got elected as a protest vote with so many working class voters who felt disenfranchised and abandoned by labour. The last labour governments tried to address poverty as a national policy which is correct however above and beyond that they did nothing specifically to redress massive regional economic disparity. We had Blair a north east PM never ever mentioning regional inequality, levelling up or championing the north east's corner. we need both national action on poverty and on regional inequality

It's 38% across the North East

Let those numbers sink in.

Thank God the Red Wall collapsed eh? What had Labour ever done for us? They took us for granted, but now, thankfully, we have the levelling up agenda.
How on earth can someone see poverty increase like that, then decide to vote for the party that increased it?

It baffles me.
