3rd February 1988 what a cup tie

This FAC 4th round replay, at a packed Ayresome Park, had everything as the mighty Boro went toe to toe with reigning 1st division champions Everton
The 1st cup tie between these two teams 3 days ago threw up an exciting end to end Cup tie & this one was as good, if not better

I was in the yellow rose having a pre match beer with my dad when a lad came in & said to us you'd best go the game soon they're queuing all around the ground, now with having tickets we thought we could walk up with 10 minutes to go & waltz in, we downed our drinks & made a, quick dash to the ground
I couldn't believe it when walking to the ground & all the bodies, outside the south terrace the queues were building, strange though once inside the chicken run wasn't as full as I thought
As the kick off approachsd the atmosphere was building nicely, Bruce Rioch had instilled a football philosophy & never say die attitude within the team, after gaining promotion from the 3rd division the Boro continued the form to challenge the top teams in the 2nd & another momentous season
The game kicked off with Everton & Peter Reid controlling the game, the ball was passing around the young Boro players when Dean Glover thought about taking the bull by the horns & when Peter Reid controlled Glover launched him into orbit, not that it unsettled Everton who soon after took a goal lead
This goal lead was held until the final minute & with the Boro pressing when we were rewarded a corner, the holgate was bouncing when Gary Hamilton floated the ball across & Mogga met it beautifully to head the Boro level taking the game in to extra time
Everton assistant said in the following nights gazette, 'when the Boro were awarded a corner, he expected the fans behind the goal sucking the ball in to the net'
ET was as exciting as can be, before Kernaghan scrambled the ball in to the holgate net & put us 2-1 up we could have scored & after we took the lead on the night we could & should, have increased our lead, the Boro were buzzing
As the clicked ticked down & it looked like another fantastic cup night on Teesside Paul Kerr running the clock down in the east end seats corner flag & with his socks around his ankles tried to win a corner only to kick the ball out for an Everton goal kick..................
The remaining minute wasn't suppose to be how this cup tie ended only to say the goal kick found itself in Boro's goalmouth, Trevor Stephens & Colin Cooper challenged for the ball with Coops getting the final touch & the ball agonisingly creeping past the outstretched Stephen Pears for an undeserved equaliser
From a brilliant atmosphere inside AP you could hear a pin drop

Incredible atmosphere at Ayresome Park. The all-seater Riverside can never compete.

Shame no goal line technology in those days as it looked a goal.

I remember listening to this on the radio.

It was so tense I couldn't bare it.

I never listened to a game on the radio for many years after that.

Certainly a memorable game indeed & one for the older generation, who were lucky enough to be there & look back with fondness
