IMHO, Willie Maddren managed the club at our lowest ebb, ran the club on a shoestring while signing some quality players for the mighty Boro, but his best signing for me was bringing Sir Bruce Rioch to our football club as 1st team coach

Sometimes, if you're lucky a manager & club are a perfect fit, we were very lucky indeed
 
Got to agree with that Erimus74. Willie got some unfair stick at his time in office. However, history tells us that he was actually a very under appreciated manager too. He had an eye for talent and built the foundations for recovery. Like his life, his career as both player and manager were cut far too short too. One of my favourite ever people associated with our club. A true legend. The best ever player never to have been capped for England in my opinion.
