20 years ago today - NYFD NYPD and all those that lost their lives that day

Yes, what a sad and tragic day that was - so many brave and selfless NYFD and NYPD men and woman needlessly lost their lives - my step-dad was a fireman and my son wants to join.

I was in NYC only a week or so before the attack and I remember taking photographs of a NYFD fire engine in downtown NY, responding to an emergency, complete with some of the crew clinging to the side - I've still got the photo and when the subject of 911 comes up I always think of that photo and how many of those men must have lost their lives only a matter of days later.

I have so much respect and admiration for those first responders who risked and gave their lives that day. Genuinely heroic people.
The whole thing is just desperately sad. Three thousand innocent civilians killed on that day alone, and up to half a million innocent civilians killed in the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq that followed.

What's largely forgotten is that 343 firefighters died only that day . 220 have died subsequently from injuries sustained on that day and 1 in 8 have developed cancer/Asbestosis etc . Bear in mind there were over 9000 deployed that day = a lot of souls .
Let's not forget 60 or so cops and other frontline staff .

As someone with a lot of ties to that great city and have visited it many many times and have great friends that live there.

I echo your post NYPD and all those that died that awful day.
