Right at the end of the late, great, Willie Maddrens time as manager he decided to bring in a new full time 1st team coach, wilth John Coddington doing it part time & running a pub

After advertising the position in the Daily Mail it was & sifting through the applicants thete were 4 names remaining
John Pickering
Sam Ellis
Peter Morris
Bruce Rioch

Ald Duffield, our chairman at the time wanted to sit in on some interviews, which Willie was happy with

After all 4 applicants been interviewed Willie would have been happy with any of the 4 but thought John Pickering would have been his choice, Alf who only sat in on Bruce's interview was favouring BR

As we know Bruce was given the job & after 3 games handed the manager job in a temp role after Willie sadly left the club

How our history could have been different if Willie had had his way

Willie the right man at the time, as was Bruce following him, IMHO mind

You say that but didn't Pickering have a far better win % at Boro than Rioch?! ;)
