Except there was no cup to receive.
Dr Tosh Warwick explains how Boro won the FA Amateur Cup final 2-1 against Old Carthusians at Headingley - a major deal in those days but their opponents did not bring the trophy with them. It was a big north versus south clash and a public school side from Charterhouse were defeated by by the "sturdy men" from the north. A shift in the power based in football and Boro celebrated a national success for the new town side. But where was the cup? Tosh explains below and look at the colour of our shirts?
mfc.co.uk news on this day

The FA Amateur cup was inaugurated 1893-94 when the 1st winners of the trophy were Old Carthusians

The following season Boro beat Bishop Auckland, Darlington, after 2 drawn games & Old Brightonuans 8-0 before beating a team from Portsmouth called Lancaster Regiment in the semi final played at Derby, the Boro won 4-0 & meeting Old Carthusians in the FA Amateur cup final on the 27th April 1895 at Headingly winning 2-1 after going behind in front of 4,000 fans

At Middlesbrough Station a band led the to the celebration at the Masham Hotel, triumphant winners, the problem being Old Carthusians had considered the result a formality that they had not bothered to bring the FA Amateur trophy with them

Erimus - if you read Tosh's article, he suggest that there may actually be an alternative explanation for Old Carthusians not bringing the trophy to the final.
