HOOF 31 January 2021: 12 Day Quiz - DAY 13 -TIE BREAK RESULTS - Guess Erimus74's favourite Boro footballers

This is another Potential ip dip. Personally I loved TC. He as a really exciting player and if I remember rightly he gave erimus74 a memorable 18th birthday on his debut where he was unplayable. (TC that is, not erimus74) Hendrie could also be arguably in with a shout, but he is probably more remembered as a striker.

I feel it will be one of the above I know erimus74 was ever so proud of the Rioch Babes and the excitement of youth and the feeling of hope that followed, Rippers was a huge part of that. I will say Cochrane though (with clenched cheeks).

I might yet edit though

Bit of lifestyle restructuring going on. Mornings are now a lazy get up time, a very quick look at the news, quick Guardian crossword, NYT Sudoku, chores and exercise. When all of that is done I will do stuff on the internet. Probably from early afternoon.

So I will be processing this round of the quiz when I have finished my final exercises. The last of my morning tasks today. Probably in half and hour to an hour from now.

Hope you are all keeping well.

Sorry for the delay. Been busy scheduling things in my life.

Here is a lovely set of words from Erimus74:

"Only one No7 for me John, Terry Cochrane, I remember after work & buying the evening gazette back page headlines when we broke our transfer record of £238k to prize this unknown from Burnley
On the saturday of his debut, the 14th October 1978, my 18th birthday, which so far that season we had failed to record a single home win of our 4 games
Standing in the Holgate as the teams kicked off this new signing stood on the touchline & throughout the match he never left it all, as if he were stuck on the white line, he was mesmerising & became a terrace hero from that game on, we won 2-0 with an OG from Martin Peters & David Mills strike

Terry Cochrane scored his 1st Boro goal on his 3rd appearence away to Aston Villa in a 2-0 win, 3 games, all 2-0 wins, he couldn't do anymore to enhance his popularity, infact the 1st game he missed, the 4th game Boro played since signing, Bristol City at home, Mark Proctor wore the No7 shirt & as I stood in the Holgate watching a drab goalless game Terry's status went higher, he was badly missed
What an exciting player he was, I've met Terry numerous times, lovely bloke he still talks fondly of his time here
Played 128 games, between ‪1978 - 1983‬ scoring 12 goals, that goal against Wolves in the FAC 6th round, lifted the holgate roof

When Malcolm Allison was manager & opportunies of a game were very slim, he started 7 games in season 82-83, Ironically his final game was away to Burnley, he decided to take a chance & went to Hong Kong after talking to a friend, playing 12 games, scoring 8 goals
He later returned to the UK playing for Gillingham, Millwall, Hartlepool & ending up at Synners
Stuart Ripley was a massive favourite of mine but Terry Cochrane was the one for me

Great signing by John Neal, I could live to be a 100 & watch Boro till then & I don't think I will see a winger excite me as much as he did"

As you can see it is now 3 people at the top of the table. With junos_boots having given us his first wrong answer.

Next position in old fashioned terms is a left half back. A more modern definition is a left sided holding midfielder (number 6). As usual. The position is more important than the number.

As usual. Answers by 12:00 noon UK time tomorrow."

For clarity Spanishman, in the lesser spotted 4-4-2 formation below

Are you talking about player H.......? If so, i assume the answer need not be a left footer, or are you seeking a left footed player from erimus74?
Ta

Edit: Well this is a right old conundrum, at least given Spanishmans later explanation and knowing where Souness lined up on the pitch to start with so on that basis he fits the explanation given by Spanishman, but in no way was Souness ever a left half. I will say him though, Souness. I just hope erimus74 notes Spanishmans latter comments and takes that into account.

Am going to get my left and right side mixed up here, not to mention struggling with who from pre 2000s was a holding midfielder, sure we only had midfield hard men or the soft flair types!

Anyway, I'll go for Souness from Erimus, though my personal favourite would be Gary Hamilton!

Bobby Murdoch

After reading Spanishman's response below I am editing (hope that is allowed and will go for Bobby Murdoch in this position

I'll go for Graeme Souness even though I always picture him as number 4 I know for certain he will be in one of these two midfield positions.

It is the same conundrum as Heine (I got lucky with him), I knew he would be in there but is this the correct number? After my nightmare with both Terry and Tony Cochrane yesterday, hope to get back on track today :)

If a Boro team were typically to play with two holding midfielders (G & H), then I guess it would be H. Does not have to be left footed. Could be a right footer playing in a pair. Playing on the left. Or it could be a left footer playing in that left hand side defensive midfielder role. I suggest that the position is more important that the left/right foot. Both are more important than the number (6).

In an older style formation they used to have a left back, a left half back and a left winger. All on the left side. In that case it would be the left half back.

I myself an in a dilemma here as I am not sure whether Bobby Murdoch played as a holding midfielder on the right. I believe he was right footed but again not sure. So do I use him now as the left side defensive (play making) midfielder. Or do I save him for the right side equivalent (number 4 in my list or G with a pair of defensive midfielders).

I am still thinking about my selection.

For me it is probably a toss up between Souness and Murdoch. I think I am going for Murdoch. As I think Souness was more forward thinking. As he was younger and fitter.
