In my opinion this is the best poem ever written about war. Horrific. "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country", indeed...

My Great Grandfather was a machine gunner at the Somme 
I agree. It’s rightly been a regular set piece in English Lit GCSE for some time but I hope it doesn’t result in the meaning getting lost because of over-familiarity. I’m thinking of Baz Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet being used as a teaching aid and the number of kids who thought that guns and fast cars were written into Shakespeare.In my opinion this is the best poem ever written about war.
