1,610 UK Covid deaths reported today

I remember at the start of all this watching a tv programme in March and a very well educated doctor saying if we come out of this with 20,000 deaths it will be some kind of a good result and that shocked me then to think 20,000 deaths and he seemed happy enough and we are nearer to 100,000 and just hope it all slows down very soon!!

So hard to comprehend the long tail of emotional damage this can have. So many families unable to spend the final months and days together or pay their respects the way they would have wanted.

it is truly tragic, but the next week or two could be worse still for deaths with the number of people in hospital and ICU at the moment, but at least the number new cases is going down so things are going in the right direction again and the vaccine roll put will obviously help, but like i said the next week or two it is going to be heart breaking and grim

So many sh*t decisions that have got us to this point. It's infuriating to think that all this failure probably won't even have any sort of repercussions for the tories.

The Tories, along with the SNP, the experts and just about everyone else in a position of responsibility, told people to keep away from each other over Christmas; the slogan was “Don’t kill your grandparents just because you want to have Christmas Dinner with them”. Hundreds of thousands of people, maybe millions, stuck two fingers up at that advice over Christmas and New Year and mixed with their families. We are now seeing the consequences of those people cocking a snook at the advice they were given.

I, along with many others, said at the time that we would see a huge surge in deaths in mid January because a lot of people were absolutely determined to mix over Christmas, contrary to guidance. The chickens are now coming home to roost.

The Tories are incompetent idiots who could t organise the proverbial in a brewery but I rather think the death figures we are seeing now is almost entirely the result of irresponsible, selfish behaviour by those who were determined to ignore advice, mix socially, hug, get drunk together, etc. Over Christmas and New Year.

Cases are down a bit now though, that will be reflected in the death toll soon I'm sure.
Not soon but eventually. Certainly for the next week we’ll see the worst results from the 600000 plus per day cases and overloaded hospitals. Surely hospitalisations will drop in the next fortnight? Then deaths to follow

It’s quite scary if I’m honest - I try not to think about it, try to avoid the news and just be as careful as I can - I barely go out these days.

I cannot imagine the grief and heartache that others are going through right now.
I thought we were turning the corner and perhaps we are but there are some staggering statistics out there still.

I don’t even know what to think anymore.

Huge death numbers were inevitable, we were getting 60,000+ people testing positive every single day, with the hospitals overloaded, and I expect that's not the last time the record death toll will be broken.

We'll be on over 100,000 official deaths by next week, awful.
Lunchtime news said it has reached 106,000
Yes , these are people's loved ones, not just statistics and numbers, think of all the families and friends mourning the deaths of their loved ones.
Absolutely heartbreaking, people of this country must take heed and 100% follow rules and guidelines.
We are in a terrible state, transmissions seem to be reducing, that's the hope plus vaccinations.
My heart goes out to all families who are mourning, not only covid deaths but all other aspects of health.
So sad.
Absolutely Maccarone. It’s tragic and absolutely terrifying. Two friends of ours are dead from this, we attended one funeral by Zoom last Friday.

And yet the irresponsible still arrange their house parties, still don’t socially distance and don’t wear masks properly.

When are people, particularly the young, ever going to take this seriously?

One thing everyone needs to understand about this: we are ALL, each and every one if us, all at risk of dying from this, no matter what our age, none of us are immune, even if we’ve had the first jab. FFS people, take care of yourselves and don’t take any risks. Stay home, stay safe

Sorry Foggys I can't agree.

The tories were insisting on the 5 day relax over christmas until much too late.

Closing schools came much too late. How stupid to send all the kids in to mix for 2 days before doing the inevitable.

The original lockdown last year came much too late - don't forget premier league clubs were cancelling their games before any lockdown happened. Imagine that, the greed-is-good money league, the focal point of the corruption of the beautiful game and yet they're more responsible than our government.

The tier systems have been a stupid policy in a country this small. Makes no sense to close pubs/restaurants in one area and inevitably have people congregating in other areas.

The eat-out-to-help-out policy was completely stupid. How low were the infection numbers before that? Imagine wasting all the effort people went to March-July just to prop up the likes of Nandos.

Boris telling people he's still shaking hands with everyone at the start.

The lack of support for self employed.

Waiting until the last possible minute to extend furlough.

Dominic Cumming's eye test.

No doubt there'll be plenty of other shockers I've forgotten about. And like I said there'll be no repercussions for the individuals who've made these grave errors. It's miserable.

Absolutely spot on. And add in those who've ignored the rules/guidance/advice since day 1.

For your post to hold much water we would have to have been seeing levels not rising as they were before Christmas. There hasn't been a massive jump but a general progression of infections and deaths that follow. Christmas wouldn't have helped but to suggest its down to Christmas where we are now is simply wrong. All the stats say so.

And that Johnson guard dog Jenny Harries just continues to lie and sneer. Schools are safe she suggests....
"doing two lateral flow tests a week "means that two tests in a week is equivalent in effectiveness and accuracy of one PCR". No it doesn't Jenny and I'm pretty sure you'll be retiring soon on a gold plated pension and a nice comfy directorship of a medical company.

Harries adds accuracy of the LF tests "has perhaps been misunderstood in some circles" not in my circle it hasn't Jen.

Is this the woman who said we needed an adult conversation about PPE?

Has anyone just watched the news reports on Royal London Hospital by Clive Myrie on tonight's BBC 6 o'clock news. It was absolutely heart breaking. The NHS staffs are amazing people but you can see how the constant pressure is getting to them.

And they are not even mentioning the excess deaths anymore which was 71000 in December.

Yea, I did. It was frightening, disheartening and massively frustrating knowing that people do not necessarily see this side of it. That peice should be shown and shared across all platforms regularly and hopefully the remaining selfish few will take heed. The pressure on staff is there to see, it should be acknowledged and our own reactions to it should make us all do our bit and take responsibility to help ease the pressure
