“We follow the science”

Is this throw away line that appears to be this govts mantra, ironically a barrier to deflect any accountability or blow back preventing any blame on this administration.

as we don’t elect scientists or medical advisors we elect politicians and it is they that are ultimately responsible for leading the nation.

The response to face masks was a good example. If we all wore them, those who really need them would suffer. So it isn't recommended
The Hunter review of 31 studies actually says there are people other than health professionals who would benefit; that wasn't mentioned. It also says there would be a small benefit to everyone. Me going out or not had a small effect on transmission. Small is big if everyone did it. The reality is this of not a scientific decision other than there aren't enough masks to do the right thing. Taiwan prepared that everyone in the country could have 4 masks a week from the beginning of the outbreak.

Testing is another example of where we were told that we were “following the science”, this was despite every other country tackling the disease and the advice of the WHO, who stated repeatedly that you can’t test too much as the more data you have the more control of the virus you will get.

it has been quite apparent for some time now that “the science” we were originally following has been wrong or misleading for some time as remember the herd immunity mentality and oh as long as you are washing your hands being the key. Where are they now.

the truth is we should have been mass testing from the off despite what “ the science” said.

Btw I’m not attacking science, i’m attacking the accountability or lack of, as I suspect “we follow the science” will soon be “we blame the science”.

At least two thirds of our population would have to have been infected for the herd immunity theory to work - it’s the same for any virus. Seeing as we have tested a tiny fraction of the population we have no idea, even roughly, how many have had covid 19

do you think they shouldnt follow expert advice ?

And if we were following the science why are we in a mad rush to test everyone now ( finally) where as a few weeks there was -“apparently little to no point testing before.

It’s quite simple
Advise on staying at home, advise on social distancing, advise on what should be locked down or not
If it fails - it’s our fault for not listening

We are following the science is the same - blame the scientists

For clarity - the science is not out of a text book here. There is lots of science that can be followed. Cabinet’s role is to choose which one.
So ‘there are lots of differing scientific views on how we should approach it, after carefully reviewing them the cabinet decision is....’

The results
120 deaths per million population so far
Compare with Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore etc less than 10 (only Spain France and Italy have a worse per capita performance) Normally we only compare our selves to Spain and Italy in footballing terms
For reference Germany has around 28 deaths per million population

What are you expecting them to say?
Should they base their approach on hunches or a right wing media clamour to save an economy over saving lives?
Governments the world over have made mistakes, some with far more deadly consequences than ours. You also have to remember that every country in the world is trying to fight this and the rate of spread and infection has put enormous stress on medical supplies and it will take time for the global capacity to catch up. Components and chemicals for testing kits are all in demand and also remember, these tests have been developed from scratch inside a few months.

if anyone wants to show me where the government has deviated from following the experts we employ id be interested
