I've really dined out on this over the years, so bear with it.
I was Ents Chairman at Uni very early 80's. I came back to Boro one weekend and watched a very late show on TV featuring a band I'd never heard of. I thought they were raw but brilliant. We had a ball coming up in one of the Uni halls, so I made a few enquiries and found we could hire the band, with little contractual fuss , for around £1500 for the main event.
As Uni committees go, I put the case, but no-one had heard of them, and were a bit concerned that we weren't putting on 'A name'
So we didn't book them.
By the time the ball went ahead they had been on TOTP and their star was going out of the sky. We hired Mud in the end, who were good, but what might have been if we had booked U2 for £1500, eh?
