£352 billion to convert UK homes to Heat Pumps

agreed, but I guess the more of these are fitted, the cheaper production and fitting costs will become. IT's so expensive because in this country its still a very niche product.

At the same time new gas boiler costs will increase.

The third point is as gas costs continue to rise, the yearly savings will increase.

Give it 10 years and maybe the equiv cost of a new gas boiler will be 3k, the cost of a new heat pump will drop to 8k, and the yearly savings will be £1k, giving you a 5 year break even.

The problem is I and many others will want to wait until it gets to the lower pay back point. In the meantime we need people to put them in, take the risk and have the money to do so in order to increase production and bring unit costs down.

Until this happens unit cost will stay high.

I am looking at the possibility of installing a decent 4kw solar panel system on my roof with battery storage.
This could enable me to heat individual rooms with oil filled electric radiators.
Also replace electric shower with mixer shower.
Also charge electric car on the drive when I eventually get one.
Am I missing something ?
Would this provide you with most of your electricity consumption?

What are costs and pay back period? Was looking briefly yesterday but was finding it hard to find costs.

Installation costs vary widely depending on the gelology and location of your property. To get one installed for a three bed house all in could cost you anything from 12k upto about 20k. They reckon it can make you savings of up to 1k per year on your energy bills while saving approx 35000kg of co2 emisisons a year. so payback is 12-20 years typically excluding any maintenance costs.

If you read on the space required, its either something like 200sqm of back garden for horizontal pipes, or 100m down for vertical, which is more expensive (this is for the ground source). I can see this being problems for a lot of people as most people dont have 200 sqm gardens so would be the more expensive options.

Solar I read is approx 5% return so after about 20 years its paid for itself - if it lasts that long - same calculation with electric cars - most cars don't last 20 years though so the average person is paying a premium for one at present. People had solar fitted because they were effectively getting big subsidies that the rest of us pay for in our high electric bills. The subsidies were reduced and the solar panel installation were much reduced.

These air/ground source heat pumps looks like even more expensive at present because you are paying at least 6 times the price of a gas boiler - with cars its only just over double for electric against unleaded.

What a ridiculous last comment

I am no expert in solar power.
I do know that electric showers 8kw and hearing water ie kettle is 2kw are the most expensive things.
Oil filled radiators on low can use about 500w each.
An electric car which is just driven locally doesnt need a fast charger I believe.
So I assume a 4kw solar system with battery storage would provide most of my needs most of the time.
I think petrol and diesel prices are only going one way and we all need to do our bit for air quality as well as the planet warming imo.
