£1.2 Million a day wages.

not the minimum wage

Minimum wage increases from 1 April:

  • From £8.72 to £8.91 an hour for workers over the age of 23
  • From £8.20 to £8.36 for those aged 21-22
  • From £6.45 to £6.56 for 18 to 20-year-olds
  • From £4.55 to £4.62 for under-18s
  • From £4.15 to £4.30 for apprentices
Regardless of actual amounts, why are apprentices paid less? Always been the case, I started working in 1968 as an apprentice and my first weeks pay was £5.25 (actually £5-5-0) My pal of the same age was paid £10 per week stock taking (unskilled) in the steelworks. Once your apprenticeship was complete the opportunity and earning potential was much greater I admit, but it was a long wait.

Is that a serious question? Make it illegal. Online gambling is illegal in New York State, but legal in New Jersey. The online gambling companies have to check that they only accept bets from NJ residents, so it can be done.

Its a good scheme for a young person if it leads to a useful recognised qualification and a good job, however alot of employers can use it for very cheap labour, put someone through a level 1/2 qualification at little expense to themselves, then let the apprentice go at the end of this. Just to go and hire another one so they never have to pay a real wage.

Passing a law is easy enough - enforcing it isn't. Where do you think Bet365 makes its money? bet365 China

Just to add some balance, it should be pointed out that she and her company are major philanthropists and donors to the Labour Party

I am ashamed to say that I pay my showroom staff NMW, not by choice, but necessity as a new business we havent made enough to raise them to a resonable level. Luckily these are mums who are part time workers and so arent solely responsible for supporting their family. As an employer I can either give them hours or pay. If I raise the pay I have to cut the hours, my staff understand the problem and appreciate my support for them through the pandemic.

To put everything into perspective, I have not paid myself anything and have not taken money out of the business. I have had to live on my recently cashed in pension benefit.

Not all employers who pay NMW are ripping off the staff members, some of us are trying to provide employment opportunities and will raise pay and hours when the opportunity arises.

Thats absolutely fine fella, small new businesses are not the issue, its the ones that pay as little as possible while banking cash themselves - Asda pays £9.18 an hour, thats 27p above the minimum wage. last year they made £500m in profits. How many Asda staff claimed in-work benefits? A fair few I imagine

The fact that an 18 year old could be doing the same job as a 30 year old but being paid significantly less is wrong on every level.
Seems like a nailed on case of age descrimination.

Imagine a 65 year old not getting paid the same as a 30 year old for the same job, there would be hell on.

The thing to remember is low paid workers spend their money, stimulating the economy, pay a low oaid worker a extra 1000 a year and you get a good chunk back in taxes and their spending creates jobs
Give a billionaire millions more and they squirrel it away , quite often avoiding paying any tax

No.
Denise + Peter Coates havent donated money to the Labour Party since 2016.

A lot of companies take advantage of the apprentice level minimum wage there as well. Jobs that really aren't apprenticeships being labelled as such. Over the years I've seen bars, restaurants and kebab shops doing this, but I'm sure there will be others.
