Chuba Goal Reaction

Cracking post Rob. I hadn't noticed his reaction till a few minutes ago and had no idea about the racial abuse. The internet I loved when i started out as a young IT student 37 years ago, is not the same place now. The hatred you see is unreal. Racism has been around for thousands of years but now people think they can hide behind a screen. More needs to be done about it. It isn't hard to track and find.

I left all my social media recently as it was bad for my mental health, even this place is toxic at times..

Eternal September

Those who boo players taking the knee do it for one reason
To tell everyone that they are racists?
Because booing is racism?
Because they don’t like non racists?
Because their racist friend is booing and they want to join in?

Even without thinking about it I could think of four or five reasons.

The none racist internet 37 years ago? In 1985?

The boos for the Blackpool players taking the knee was very clear on the radio.

Why do it? It needs to be called out more.
3 stupid p!@#£d lads behind me booing, not sure they knew why they even did, young black lad in front of me didn't react, bit ashamed I didn't say anything, but where would it have got me.
Are they just thick and join in or are they racists?, as they fist pump said young black lad when chuba scored the 3rd.

Agreed, it was Asambolonga who when captain made the call to not do it, I wonder if the players have discussed returning to do it again ?

That said it's become pretty meaningless in a lot of ways now, as largely even the discussion around the roots of the gesture and why it was needed had faded away.

I cant believe anyone would boo it, but then we do have our share of toxic horrible fans who will trot out some "all lives matter" rubbish no doubt.

Not sure that’s the full story but you may have better info than me.
My understanding is Warnock spoke to Britt, as captain. His view was it wasn’t right for him.
After that it gets a bit murky but Warnock and Britt addressed the players together.
At least one player said Warnock was very clear with his view.

The captain and manager were at one.
Difficult for anyone to speak out after that.

Internet access to some supercomputers was expanded by the National Science Foundation.

The people using it were all in universities and research labs at that time. Clever people. The advent of the WWW opened its use to a whole different set of people for a whole different set of uses. And that's when the morons appeared online.

Actually I don't think there are huge numbers of racists but I do think they do an extraordinarily enormous amount of damage for a relatively small group. And some people type stuff they don't believe for some bizarre reason.

I did my dissertation 25 years ago on "Right wing extremism and the internet" and so it's always been there since its very early days.

Are you suggesting that outspoken Brexiteer, fan of Boris Johnson and general allround gobshite in some way instigated the stopping of taking the knee ?

Incredibly powerful, emotional reaction from Chuba following his goal last night. The referee was superb giving him the time to recover from tears to reflection to prayers to a roar of pure emotional release. Quite clear what he has gone through this week. Fans hero racially abused online. The club stand behind him. His fans stand behind him. He is an intelligent, articulate man, he must have been in turmoil.
I cannot possibly know what it feels like to be racially abused but that reaction from Chuba Akpom showed just how deep the wounds must go. I hope those fans that boo players taking the knee also reflect on how confusing and disturbing that must be for Chuba, Isaiah and Zack Steffen etc.
After the game there were some groundstaff on the pitch. One was getting ribbed by Boro fans for being overweight and then for being bald. Am not saying that is right or wrong but he was able to cllap and face up to this as a joke. A bit of banter. Racism is altogether on a different level it cuts centuries deep. Chuba's goal reaction really brought this home to me.
#showracismtheredcard
It was a very moving response from Chuba.
Though laughing at the groundstaff for being fat/bald is definitely wrong. It's OK to say he was able to take it as a joke but did the Boro fans know that beforehand? Or maybe he was actually distraught but didn't want to show it.

Oh, one more thing -
"etc"?

Agreed, yet someone was telling me yesterday on here that talking about an undercurrent of racist football fans was akin to Yaxley-Lennon denigrating all muslims. There's a long long way to go with racism in this country unfortunately

it’s a complex issue, one that won’t be solved or improved in real terms if people aren’t willing listen to a number of different voices
If you are waiting for enlightenment by racist voices then it isn't going to happen. If you want to enter into dialogue with these people it will never lead to a constructive discussion with them eventually seeing the error of their ways. I'm sorry but it's naive to expect anything other than bile and stupidity from them. I'm not sure what benefit there is giving racist voices room to air their grievances.

Racism has been there from the very beginning, the old bulletin boards etc, just as the internet has great applications for connecting people and sharing information.. that information isn't always pleasant and neither are the people being connected.

It’s that exact thing. Taking the knee is political.. and BLM is ran by Ann Teefer.
Taking the knee was done before BLM, Colin Kapernick was doing it on his own to highlight racism, but it had been done years before that. The raised fist was done in the 60s by the black power movement, but again had been appropriated from decades before. To say "but BLM are political" is a cop out

Agreed. Whatever dirt you may be able to dredge up on individuals involved in BLM - and not for a second endorsing that the slurs are true/justified, I have no idea to be honest - the motivations of the vast majority supporting BLM are simply protesting racial injustice, not proposing a marxist coup.

I'm not waiting for enlightenment. Saying that entering into dialogue with people will never lead to a constructive discussion is quite defeatist and ignorant in itself. Ignorance cannot defeat ignorance. Bile and stupidity can go both ways. Just because you are not racist doesn't mean you can't be stupid.
"Giving racist voices room to air their grievances" - Those grievances I imagine will be unfounded.. but how can they be understood and changed if they are not heard. 'Racist voices' might not even be a fair or just description. You gonna say a daft kid booing with his mates is racist.. despite him having black friends and family?

I think folks are scared to have an open and honest discussion for fear of being branded a racist. Understandable. There are some complete morons out there who are happy to call people racist or insinuate without any cause, rhyme or reason.. beyond their own ignorance and stupidity.

Here we are two years later and I don't think we're any further forward. Clearly not, if anything we've gone backwards!!

Yes I am aware. "It’s that exact thing. Taking the knee is political.. and BLM is ran by Ann Teefer"

I had hoped that 'Ann Teefer' would have made my point a bit clearer for those lacking..

We have had Chris Wilder, Leo Percovich and Michael Carrick since then. To my mind only two clubs didn't participate. Boro and Millwall.. i'm happy to be told otherwise. For Britt Assombalonga to say he and his team were not going to participate in taking the knee is fair enough.. perhaps that instruction came from further up? Maybe he went to the club and said rather than us taking the knee I would like the club to actually do something directly to address racism in the game.. something that didn't involve the players being distracted or put under unnecessary scrutiny.

I don't feel as if the choice not to take the knee worked tbh.. us and milwall ffs. if anything, if think we need to up our game, more so than clubs that have participated in taking the knee. one poster suggesting it should have happened at blackpool.. which I think would have been the right thing to do, certainly after the disgusting tweet aimed at chuba.
