Democrats retain control of senate

Saw this earlier. I'm sure it's the same here and probably a big part of why right wing parties do so well. Peoples perceptions of who and what is around them are way off.

Hard to believe anyone would actually estimate 20% of people are trans. 1 in 5?!

So... the red wave hasn't materialised. Fetterman has flipped PA and now the Senate is on a knife edge as we await results from GA (likely to go to a runoff), AZ and NV. Looks like the House will go to the Republicans, but only narrowly. Dems have overperformed. The one big plus for the Rs is DeSantis, but if he ends up going head to head with Trump, it could be very interesting to see what happens within the ranks of the party.

And as I type, Lauren Boebert is losing her Senate race, which would REALLY be a bonus for those of us with morals and brain cells, although sadly NYT predicts her to make up the ground.

It's 2.10am and my alarm will be going off at 5.30, so I'm basically f'd, but sleep is the last thing on my mind.

So Trump has finally publicly warned Ron DeSantis not to run for the presidency, otherwise he will have to release information that would hurt him.
Although the GOP looks set to take the House but hopefully maybe not the Senate. There’s a chance of an implosion if it seems Trump doesn’t have the pull he once had.
The more sane in the party know that he should go. Should image they’re hoping the DOJ will finally file charges and get him into court, on something that precludes him for standing for any office ever again.

Throw religion into that mix and that’s when it gets scary. That’s what is driving this agenda the hard line Christian Right.

God guns and trump.

I had a really good friend in the US who wore a t shirt just like that. Its a weird thing because he was so kind and generous. I once asked him if he would give help to me and my family if we needed it and he was so offended just at the question. I then asked why would we be different to an immigrant family that he didnt know.
We would argue politics all of the time and he constantly quoted fox news.
A lot of these voters are just red-neck oath keeper types - they are nice, caring people but to be patriotic is very important.
My friend described himself as a conservative, god fearing proud american and to him that means the republican party.

I get that but that’s just it trump isn’t even a republican. He’s hijacked the party and the flag.

Look at how he treated a real republican in the late sen mcain or some like liz chaney. He has as much venom for them as he does the Dems.

It’s weird it really is.

As you say the Lincoln project republicans that want him out are the only real hope.

You are right - but the scary thing is how many Americans slavishly accept everything he says - and his apparent hold on the majority of the Republican Party

John Oliver's latest show focuses on Election Subversion and is truly terrifying. The main action could be away from both houses this time round and may ultimately lead to Republicans "winning" the next election, regardless of who actually wins.

It's really starting to feel that, other than upping sticks and leaving the country, there is very little hope for sane American voters.

And that kind of stuff is seeping into the UK - we are currently seeing boundary changes and the introduction of voter ID with the ID requirements easier for the elderly to satisfy than the young. And who votes Tory... the elderly.

The gerrymandering in this country is getting as bad.

If you are under 60 and don't have a passport or driving licence how can you vote?

Huge divisions in americans, it's a deeply entrenched country politically.

My mates were largely educated urban folk. I knew 3 republicans, one who had worked for the party, and whose dad worked with Ken Starr in the case against Bill Clinton. The other a multi-millionaire, the guy was from 3 generations of millionaires, the woman was from 2 generations of clergy. So republican through and through. But pretty much everyone else I knew saw right through the bluster and nonsense of the GOP.

One of my mates said "They don't get it, the harder they push right, the harder I will push left", and I think that huge numbers of educated americans feel that same way

In fact, it's now looking likely that gerrymandered districts in New York, of all places, have handed the Republicans the House. Don't think many people saw it happening that way.

When the republicans get the majority, they will abandon the investigations into everything Trump has done, throw out Nancy and he is free to run again. He will see this as a great victory.
The battle will be between him and DeSantis

This is a big victory for democracy and possibly for the Democrats. For the GOP to only gain a few seats in a midterm during an economic downturn is a disaster and it is down to one man.
Trump backed candidates have been useless and even the likes of Steven Miller and Kayleigh Macinwhatsherface are saying that Trump is a drag on candidates. He may command the base and still be the GOP nominee elect, but Trumpism is losing hold with more moderate Republicans and DiSantis has a real chance of capitalising on this.
