BP more than doubled its third-quarter profit from a year earlier to $8.15 billion and expanded its share buybacks by $2.5 billion, joining rivals in reporting bumper profits that have sparked renewed calls for energy companies to pay more taxes.

Unfortunately even the extra windfall tax which SHOULD happen is only button's. The mess that this criminal shower have got us in is so deep that we are all going to suffer starting with the budget/financial statement in the next fortnight.
Leaks from the Treasury forecast tax rises across the board. If you are a public sector worker expect a 2% pay rise next year.
Rider: This could be the leak to prepare us for slightly better real news when it comes.

that's a better rise than I got this year as a civilian contractor in the MOD

Not a government with a Thatcher ideology, one which sees itself as remote as possible from social governance, one which is in favour of the private sector carrying out as many government services as possible..

In their utopia the government shrinks and the private sector folks the void.
 
There is nothing wrong with a company making profits. The problem is that the tax structure allows them to avoid paying tax on it. Big profit should equal big tax but it is too easy to get away with not paying it. That is where the pressure should be because it's not just the O&G companies. There are loads of companies making billions and paying pennies back in tax.
 
But nothing will EVER change.
The profit levels have ALWAYS been obscene and offensive.
Neo-liberalism started in this country by that old, stinking, tory fu.king bit.ch allows this profit to happen without any human consideration.
He we are: amidst a global energy crisis, including a war, and BP makes £8Bn and hardly anybody cares.
The system has been rigged globally in big business favour for decades. Millions are starving. Millions are poor and cold.
