Anybody on here being treated for adult ADHD?

I have been reading/watching a lot of things about ADHD and how it is often never diagnosed.
The black dog is knocking about a lot for me recently and I notice that depression and anxiety are often symptoms of untreated ADHD.

Any posters care to share their experiences, one way or the other?

No, but for years I've looked at it, done the questionnaires etc and keep meaning to do something about it as everything I've read describes me perfectly, but heard it's quite hard to get an adult diagnosis

The other half looked into it and went for a self referral appointment to be told there is up to a two year wait for a proper diagnosis and medication.

Think we are going to go private.

Yes. Recent diagnosis, that coupled with Bipolar. Experiences, prescribed medication that didn’t agree with me, fatigue, nightmares etc. you’ll wait a good 18mths for an assessment.

Just further in that, I don’t feel per se that I have depression, more a feeling of restlessness and displacement. The anguish arises from being unable to mesh with others, struggle to sit and relax etc.. very complicated, hard to explain.

I did the online tests (in various places) and found out that I am probably on the spectrum. TBH, at late 50s I thought there wouldn’t be much point in knowing much more so didn’t pursue it - I think I’ve just learned to live with whatever it all means. I’ve had a few depressing episodes in the past but just put it down to things happening at the time. Will be interested to read the replies on this thread.

I have pretty much given up on the NHS for mental health support as it barely exists and have been going private to therapists and shrinks for years. I just get the meds on prescription usually.

I’m very similar to what you describe. I’ve always felt like something was out of place

With you on that one.
The First Response Service and paramedics rescued me but there was no follow up care. I got passed to a specialist working for my GP practise - two phone calls and she’d lost interest in helping further by the second call.

I’m now getting help from a charity that specialise in helping the LGBT community. Even that’s been a bit fraught - she didn’t turn up for one session, cancelled another at short notice with no explanation. I don’t know.

Sounds like Autism the symptoms you are describing.

This is an area that I know little about, so apologies if I’m covering old ground. I just happened to be reading an advice column in the Guardian this morning and saw this book recommended, The Body Keeps the Score. I found it interesting enough to order it even though it does not concern me directly. Reading through reviews I think that it may of interest to people with a variety of mental health issues.

That looks interesting. I’ve just downloaded the audiobook

My missus went to see the doctor about it a couple of months ago. She got referred to see someone and had her first appointment last week. Within a couple of minutes she said she would also look at autism too. She said it would 3-4 years until dealt with properly but if she called the doctor again and gave some ‘secret word’ she would see a different company and it would be more like 18 month - 2 years.

I believe everyone has some sort of ‘label’ it just depends on where you are on the scale. Obviously peoples personal life and circumstances determine how this affects you too. I’ve been going through a rough time mentally recently, so has my wife. This has made things harder for us both to deal with. If we were living abroad, I doubt we would be anywhere near as ‘bad’ as we are at the moment.

Good luck getting sorted!

Hiya
My lad (33) used these guys recently.
Don’t think it was that expensive but he though the response was excellent.

Hope it helps

Sounds appalling that. FFS I just can't understand anyone not turning up and and not having the decency to give a reason for cancelling at short notice under any circumstances let alone yours.
Hope you find someone that can help soon.

Just walked into a trap
My partner is a therapist and thought I’d mention this to her……

”I‘ve read it several times and…. I don’t know how many times I’ve told you about that book and said you should read it…..’

Suffice to say, I’ll start it this week.

thought ADHD was more to do with young kids drinking too many blue drinks tbh..

seen some targeted ads/content recently and 100% of it rings true. not sure where to go with it tbh, but at least it's some comfort that my experience it is a thing.
