The French taking some action ref Qatar world cup

Most major cities including Paris (PSG owned by Qatar) will not have the World Cup played live for the public. Means no fan zones etc.

They say it is in response to public opinion (Pierre??)
A small gesture but at least it is something

Cantona saying he won’t be watching any game at all (much like myself but, strangely, I don’t get the headlines)

Not sure how popular fan zones would be anyhow in Nov/Dec but a positive gesture.
The whole charade of awarding Qatar the tournament followed by the near enslavement of the mainly Asian construction workforce, together with the horrifically high deaths on site, is nothing short of scandalous.

I decided when the WC was awarded to Qatar that I'd not be watching. As Cantona said, it's all about MONEY. It was not a difficult decision for me as I really have fallen out of love with football in general since it turned into moneyball and rarely watch football other than the Boro games. International football leaves me cold and the Premiership represents all that i hate about the new game - money and a fawning media - yak. If we ever go up it'll be a good time for me to get out as I've followed Boro for over 60 years now.

Re the decision by some french cities to boycott public screenings, I'm in agreement, but it's all a bit late and smells of tokenism.

EDIT Sorry, didn't reply to your actual question in my rant finny. I can't honestly say I've heard any noises from french fans, but then I don't read l'Equipe (except during the Tour) nor the daily sports pages.

Is Qatar’s human rights record worse than Russias? Did anyone boycott that World Cup?
Is it worse than the USA’s who have state sponsored torture, illegal invasions which lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians and where there police force regularly carry out the racially motivated murders of its citizens? Will anyone be making the same fuss about their hosting of the 2026 WC?
or is it different if muslims do bad stuff, not good white folk?

Yes yes it is.

Plus Russia is a footballing nation with a proud history.

Qatar isn’t. There’s no legacy at all.

I’ve just read the rest of your post

oh your one them

Strange, they’ll boycott the WC because it’s in Qatar but will buy Messi, Mbappe and Neymar shirts.
In fairness those who run the cities are putting the bans in place. Not the fans.

We know fans are fickle the world over though

The old ‘whataboutery’ response.
If you are ‘for’ human rights why aren’t you just pleased there is some progress.

It’s not whataboutery in the slightest. Its a simple question. If you are boycotting the Qatar World Cup, did you apply those lofty principles to the WC in Russia who are and have been for decades a far, far, far more malignant presence than Qatar will ever be? And will you apply them to anything involving countries who are the UKs allies with despicable human rights records? Yes or no?

Cantano is fantastic. There are 69 episodes of Columbo and he will be watching one every time there is a match on. 😂

A lot of crusaders on here will still be watching Englands first big knock out game. But as long as you bleat online and change your display picture you’re making a difference right? 😂

We disagree
I think it is whataboutery
Times have changed and people are thinking differently now

If Russia were hosting now I’m sure many would take a similar stance

Fir charity I won’t be

The World Cup shouldn't have been in Russia either.

Another tournament awarded on blatant corruption to a despotic state.

Plenty complained about it being in Russia at the time too, I know I did.

But at least they were awarded it in 2010, before a lot of their most heinous recent acts had occurred.
The invasion of Georgia in 2008 should have been enough to exclude them in my eyes, but bags of money were proven to have swayed the decision.

I'll be watching the World Cup when I can catch a game. It's the world cup, a chance to see other footballing nations you rarely get to see.
Not particularly bothered where it's hosted. FIFA makes it's money off of media rights anyways more than ticket sales.
I bet the BBC and ITV will still be showing the games.
