Idiots and their SUVs

Another illustration of how this country and the people in it are a total lost cause - the popularity of jacked up cars otherwise known as SUVs 😆

These things have never made sense. They drive poorly, are less efficient and much more expensive to run and repair than normal cars. The biggest laugh is they are now taking these already heavy vehicles and sticking a battery in them that weighs half a ton plus. It defeats the whole object of what an electric vehicle should be. That's why EVs are a shambles and certain to fail in their current form.

It actually turns out that these EVs are probably causing more damage to the environment than traditional cars. Noticed how bad the roads have got in recent years? The weight of a vehicle has a direct impact on the road surface and repairs and maintenance need to be increased dramatically. Unnecessary SUVs are a major problem but it becomes a problem on steroids when EVs are introduced. The tyre emissions also go up massively meaning any benefit to the environment has long disappeared, if it actually existed at all.

There's a house near me with a few vehicles on the drive - two SUVs and an electric. I knocked on their door a while back and told them to sell the lot of them only to be told where to go. Anyway, I made a note of the plate numbers and played my hand accordingly. I've managed to get them quite a few parking tickets when I've spotted them out and about. There was a really cheeky one where I spotted their ticket had 10 mins to go, so I hung about and got a traffic warden ready to pounce. I got a Costa in and watched the situation unfold out of sight. They returned just as the ticket had been issued. I'm not sure what was in that coffee, but it certainly tasted good, gents.

Tax them according to vehicle volume [Cubic Meters], weight and emissions.
Get them off the roads.
Our roads, especially residential - werent built to take these phallic symbols.
Many people are forced on to the roads when these lumps are parked on pavements.

This post burned down an entire forest of e-trees.

the sheer size of modern cars does annoy me, I'll admit. completely unnecessary, fashion/ego/status symbols. huge resources, completely over engineered & specced, and a sign that we are going completely the wrong way with transport design. the only good thing to come out of it is watching people trying to park the fookers. I dream of a world where each road has some converted yugo's..... to share.

Clive Sinclair had a good idea .

Are we not seeing people turning away from these cars given the price of fuel? I remember BMW X5’s were massively popular at one point but you struggle to see one these days? Same for Audi Q7’s. Perhaps it depends where you live.

Or are people classing larger family cars such as Qashqai’s, Sportage’s, Q3’s etc as SUV’s?

I've had couple of Qashqais and would class them as a bigger family car, that's it.
Owned one genuine SUV and hated it, but needed it to pull a trailer. Happy when we got rid and downsized.
Can't see the point personally of owning a Range Rover / Discovery/ X5 / Q7 etc and living in in suburbia. Each to their own I suppose.

A lot of SUVs are the same dimensions length and widith as normal cars only difference being a higher wheel position. The posts on here against SUVs are nothing to with environmental matters and all to do with envy. Phalic envy in the case above

The debate about SUVs seems to be dominated by emissions, or batteries, but there is also an environmental issue just with the size of the vehicle when , as is the case of where I live, you find 9 out of 10 cars parked on a street are SUVs. Someone could be attacked on the pavement and it would go unseen. Driving along the street, it's practically a black tunnel. When they clear a street for the tree surgeons, or whatever, you think 'wow, this is how it looked 60 years ago, what a difference'.

Another thing. You are driving on a dual carriageway at, say 70mph, in the r/h lane, overtaking buses and trucks. You can see through the windows of the car in front. When a SUV pulls out in front of you, it's like a sight screen, reducing your stopping distance and forcing you to back off.
'tall vehicles' should have the same speed restriction as HGVs. If you bought one for necessary off-road use, you won't need to go faster than 60mph.

I have a slightly alternative take on this one, purely from my own circumstances. One of my children has chosen to live about half a mile form the nearest paved road up a farm track which is regularly used in part by tractors etc.. Try driving my B class Merc up there !! the chances of removing the exhaust are interesting

Hence the Jeep Renegade but it does live entirely on my drive

Its worth pointing out that most people in this country don't live up a country lane and in those circumstances owning a 4x4 is completely justified.

I recently changed from an SUV to an estate and I now miss the ability to see beyond the car in front when driving on the motorway. Saying that, my "SUV" was a Skoda Yeti, so probably not exactly the target of the anti-SUV crowd, and certainly nothing phallic about it!
