Tav to Bournemouth confirmed

it took Steve Bruce, not exactly the most tactically aware manager, 45 minutes to work out that our weak point was our left hand side channel, specifically the pocket of space where Tav was so good at recovery runs and transitions.
That's a fair point, we struggle to contain Wallace with the ball behind Giles at the beginning of the second half. Bit harsh to mock Bruce's awareness though, he's a good football bloke with masses of experience and promotions behind him.

Exactly we didn’t have to sell if Bournemouth really wanted him then they’d pay it.

I don’t get the fee either. 20 plus east in my eyes.
The difficulty is if we’d said no, 20m or get lost then you have further disruption to our build up to the new season and then you might get 20m at the death of the transfer window but we wouldn’t be able to go and get a replacement (s) AND given tav wanted to leave you’d have a player hanging around making the managers task much more difficult and if it didn’t go through at the final hour you have a player who doesn’t want to be here!
In essence, there are a number of other important factors to consider, not just one. His price

I honestly can't believe anybody thinks Tavernier is worth £20m to anybody.
He's a good player and we will miss him, but ffs.
People throw about the £20m figure because Adam Webster, who had never played in the Prem, once went for that much. That's very much an anomaly.

Out of the 15 transfers above that £20m mark only four of them didn't have any Prem experience (same as Tav). Those were Ollie Watkins, Jude Bellingham, James Maddison and Said Benrahma. And anyone who genuinely thinks Tav is worth more than any of these four, with only two years left on his contract, needs their head checking.

The bigger fees north of that £20m mark normally go for proven Prem players being poached from clubs who've just been relegated. Players without Prem experience, but better Champ records than Tav, have only went for high teens (Bowen, KLP, Eze).

Should we maybe have pushed for a little more? Yes. Should we have pushed for closer to £15m all in (inc add-ons). Probably. Should we have slapped a £20m price tag onto Tav? Absolutely not. We'd have been laughed out of town, they'd have moved onto another target, and we'd have lost Tav on the cheap next summer.

I still don't understand why he left apart from the money. With our new goalkeeper we were looking odds on to get promoted before he decided to jump ship. I know there's a big contract involved but you'd think he would have stuck around knowing there was an excellent chance that we would be playing Premiership football next year with Bournemouth likely to go the other way.

£15m was a price I was happy with - Sky keep quoting £12.5m so it was a bit on the low side - there is a risk he will not adjust the Premier League and like with Gibson the buying club loses money. If he adjusts he's a £25m player.

As said before the big danger with Bournemouth is that they are the favs for the drop. I guess his wages have doubled and he's got a five year contract.

I'm not liking the blame-game on McGree. 3 players in the left hand side all playing new positions in our line up and McGree catches the blame. Plus we had zero coverage in the middle. It was a breakaway goal. McGree will prove I am sure to be a very astute signing and will fit in well in that position. He needs time to forge a relationship with Giles and Bola (or whoever LCB turns out to be). I did not miss Tav's ability to give away possession in very dangerous areas

Yes I would imagine the main reason is wages.

Agree about Bruce, I’m surprised he hasn’t had a spell at the Boro yet, it’s coming no doubt.

Oh I'm not blaming McGree, I actually think what caused a problem here was that Lenihan was caught further upfield, that meant that Bola couldn't cover the space and get closer to Wallace and delay him earlier.

Why on earth are we so soft. As if we’ve sanctioned it and allowed them to dot the t’s and announce it without us having a replacement on board. Other clubs do it, we are soft as sh***
We aren't in the position to get a replacement in first, it's different for Premier League clubs as they can afford it if things go wrong but if we spent a chunk of the Tav money and then Bournemouth changed their mind we'd be ****ed.

Fair point pal. Just so frustrating. I honestly thought we’d announce a replacement imminently

Tav said he left because he wanted to play in the premier League - I hope he gets plenty of games this season as there's a good chance he & Bournemouth will be back in the Championship in season 23-24

For those puzzled by the Webster fee, at some point people will have looked at us the same way for Fletcher, Gestede, Savile et al and compared to their own players.

There are still some football transfers where the negotiating skills are akin to me going to the corner shop and offering a tenner for a Dairy Milk as my opening gambit.

According to TransferMarkt, the fee was £10.71m. Guess there'd be add-ons too, which could be anything, and will no doubt relate to appearances and Bournemouth staying up.
