Congrats to the Lionesses ...

Of course it was more than the men’s as the stadium was only partially open due to to covid so it’s a moot point.

Except it's not, it's a fact.

Was the commentator meant to list every reason why other attendances were smaller?

2020 COVID
2016 Smaller stadium than Wembley
2012 Albert & Betty missed the bus and so there were a couple of empty seats
2008 segregation problems in Vienna meant that there was a 12.4% reduction in the available capacity
etc etc

That would be a fun hour, just to satisfy some middle aged men who have a chip on their shoulder about anything to do with the women's game.

Congratulations to the women's team, it's a fantastic achievement for them and it should be recognised as such.

I cannot however get behind the constant crossover to the men's game. It hasn't ended 56 years of hurt, Ellen White should not be compared to Wayne Rooney, and Alex Scott's tirade about the women not getting the biggest and best stadiums for the Euros was embarrassing. The small grounds didn't even sell out. (The popularity just isn't there, despite how much the media want to push it).

It's not sexist or misogynistic for me to say that. I am a father of two girls and I'm excited by their future opportunities with women's football, but let's just enjoy it for what it is.

You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy something.

I enjoy watching the mens national Cricket and Rugby Union teams.

Do I know all the players and their clubs/counties? Nope.

Does it impact my enjoyment? Nope.
This has echoes of all of those tiresome "you're not a proper supporter" arguments. The territory of spods and losers...

Men and womens football.....

Like chalk and cheese......no emotional comparison with any success
I'm actually pleased there are people like you at moments like this. You're the one missing out. The nation is celebrating a major tournament win and you're sitting there revelling in your own misery. You deserve that!

I mentioned on the dad joke thread the other day that mysoginy will eventually be considered as vile as racism.

If you dont like women's football don't watch it. To try and belittle the achievement suggests something about this victory needles some folks on this board. I have no idea why and I don't care. Let's not soil the celebrations though, you really don't want to be on that side of the argument.

Ludicrous that it isn't already, but actually I'm not convinced that's the case. With other forms of prejudice ignorance is such a huge driving factor, and as people get to understand more about those of different races, nationalities, sexualities etc that ignorance can't survive.

But who can claim ignorance is behind their misogyny? Feels like it's a different sort of prejudice and not one as easily eradicated.

I don't think he is being a misery saying that.

Emotionally when Toone scored last night (what a goal by the way) I don't suspect there was the outpouring of emotion that there was when Lake Shaw struck early on against Italy. There certainly wasn't in my household, even from the Mrs who had been massively looking forward to this final.

I think you're kidding yourself saying otherwise.

Look at the Boro match on Saturday. The passion and emotion shown by the Red Faction with their fantastic display. Up and down the county we see the same week in, week out with other clubs (granted not the same level as the Boro 😉). The men's game has a passion and enthusiasm that the women's game currently doesn't have. It's not a criticism, just an observation.

There was from me. Anyone else?

That's fine if there was from you, mate. Crack on. Nobody is saying don't enjoy it and revel in the success.

But you can't jump on people and call them out for saying they didn't, or that they don't enjoy women's football, or that they think women's football is s***e.

I personally haven't watched a minute of the Women's Euros because I think the game is poor. The quality of the play is dreadful, they lack technique, power, strength, agility, tactical sense. The things I love about watching football.

Not everyone has to love it, because you do.

I ain't your mate.

I also never said any of those things you're attributing to me, but keep going...

Yes full agree 👌

Just say congratulations and even if a person thinks 'but' it doesn't need saying.

Just enjoy it. I've more watched more women's football in the last 2 weeks than I have in my life. I went into it very much 'meh' and actually enjoyed it. So I guess thats a change of attitude from me.

Also a few things I'd say men can improve on. The lack of diving and faking injury was a breath of fresh air in the women's game. Also how many times do physio's come on? Hardly ever. The game just flows. I don't think I ever saw someone booked for simulation.
I agree that the cynical play was on the whole missing in this Tournament but don’t think for one moment that diving hasn’t been employed. If you had followed the Germans over the tournament they have been very clever to go to ground easily to win free kicks On quite a few occasions.

If you didn’t watch it how can you quantify such an opinion? Bottom
Line is you’re wrong .

I've seen plenty of women's football before to form my opinion of the quality of their game. How is my opinion on it wrong?

This is what gets people's back up about the whole thing. "Like it! And if you don't like it, I'm going to call you out for being wrong and out of order!"

I think having an opinion is more than fine but you can still be challenged on it. The fitness, the skill levels and professionalism in the game have improved immensely in this country over the past 5 years and this tournament has been proof of that. I have been incredibly impressed by so many aspects of the game not least the ability to move the ball, deliver at set pieces and the athleticism of many of the players.

Thought there was plenty of cynical play too.

The final 5 minutes last night was just England taking the ball to the corner over and over again.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, in my eyes, it helped us secure the victory, but I think it's a fallacy that the women's game doesn't have diving, deliberate fouling or faking injuries.
I've seen plenty of it and that's just from watching England and who they're playing at tournaments over the years, I suspect it's even more rife at a domestic level, just like the men's game.

The key one that stands out for me in this tournament was a Spanish player going down holding her head when England scored in the quarter-finals, to try and get the goal disallowed, when there was absolutely no foul and no chance she was actually hurt.

Historically keeping was always the Achilles heel in the womens game as it was absolutely woeful bordering on comical at times but this time around I’ve been impressed at the few games I have seen at how much more diving saves there has been so I think the improvements in goal keeping has def benefitted the womens game as a whole.
