Sunderland fans excited

I'm not buying into this "they are a big club because they have big attendances". Means nothing.
Their catchment are is well over double that of ours (Wearside) and add in parts of South Tyneside and County Durham (and Billingham 😉) and it's massive (500k) But if you take average attendances v. catchment area there is nothing in it.
So a lot of fans and 1 trophy in my lifetime (I wasn't even 1 when they won it) - nah, they are a well supported club, not a big club.

Anyone can make attendance stats work for them. They are pointless

We averaged more in our promotion season under Bryan Robson at Ayresome than Sunderland did in their promotion season at Roker under Peter Reid.

Who cares? We have won a trophy and played in Europe. Sunderland have been average for 70 years.

This is it in a nut shell. People talk about how well supported newcastle and sunderland are but most cities of a similar size else where in the country have more than one football club.

What a surprise, they've already started a thread to discuss whether it's a derby game or not. No doubt a few more of these will appear before we play them.

Ah, it's only taken them a day....

You can’t blame them for wanting to distance themselves from us, as if we are insignificant, their record against us over the last 10 years has been gash, mind you, they had a good run against us in the mid 1940s 😏

Never understood the 'Sunderland are big a club' stance. They've just spent more time in the third flight than we have in our entire history. Derby - another club with equal delusions of grandeur - have just done them the favour of replacing them in that league, just as they spared Sunderland's blushes in 07/08 for beating them to the all time lowest points tally in prem history. That's their last achievement of note. They are serial failures and have been for literally decades.

There’ll be two thousand mackems singing about how everyone on Teesside is a pedophile when they come here. Personally I’d eject anyone from the ground who is heard singing that kind of thing - which would be all of them. Better still just don’t give them any tickets at all
Wah! Wah! We just need to be better fans than them that’s all.

Their catchment is nearer one million if you add up all the areas.
That's why they get big crowds.

Sunderland are definitely not a big club…moderate history in terms of trophies. I do think they have very good support considering they have spent most of the last 20 years getting beat. However with a bit more success Boro can easily rival that support and get our crowds up to 28-30k again.

Sunderland are bigger than Boro in some ways.
More time in the third tier over the last 5 years than we have in our entire history.
More league one play off failures than us.
More Papa John trophy defeats than us.
They still hold the record for the most premier League defeats in a season. 29
They also hold the record or the most days without a home win. 364.
They are truly awesome.

They're so big they feel the need to constantly tell people how big they are just so everyone knows.
