I'm not buying into this "they are a big club because they have big attendances". Means nothing.
Their catchment are is well over double that of ours (Wearside) and add in parts of South Tyneside and County Durham (and Billingham ) and it's massive (500k) But if you take average attendances v. catchment area there is nothing in it.
So a lot of fans and 1 trophy in my lifetime (I wasn't even 1 when they won it) - nah, they are a well supported club, not a big club.
Anyone can make attendance stats work for them. They are pointless
We averaged more in our promotion season under Bryan Robson at Ayresome than Sunderland did in their promotion season at Roker under Peter Reid.
Who cares? We have won a trophy and played in Europe. Sunderland have been average for 70 years.
