Payero

I thought crooks was really poor last night. Not just the missed chances, but his overall play.

it was the same against reading too, but obviously the two late goals made up for it.

I’ve been a big fan of crooks, particularly his link up with Jones down the right, but he’s been below par recently
I thought he was poor against Reading but then he got two goals late on. He might well have been subbed before that.

Well the abysmal control being shown by most of our attacking players last night, there was little point in putting a player on who wants to pass to feet, I also think Payero has a touch of Browne about him in wanting to try a bit too hard when he is on, so he is never far from a booking. Hope Wilder finds a way of using him 2nd half of the season if not he will be gone as if we go up the prem is even harder

looking increasingly likely. I think Wilder is and will be brilliant for us, but think he's missing a trick with this. From the little we've seen Payero has something different and is probably technically better than any of the other three. Id rather have seen him on than 4 strikers to be honest. You need to provide service.

I suspect its a language issue as much as anything else. Wilder seems very particular about players following instructions (bit like Karanka in that respect, minus the sulking) and maybe feels he cant get those messages across well enough to Payero.
No way, Leo is there and crooks can speak a bit. I think there’s too much been made of the language issue, not like the old days when you really were isolated

Im not saying he's sat in the corner of the changing room clueless to what's going on. I'm sure the tactics are communicated to him through Leo and he could play the system and understand what's been asked generally.

It's nuances in the heat of the moment that'll be more problematic. Wilder probably has 10? mins if that, to get any tactical tweaks across at half time. There might be several for individual players. To get the same message across to someone who doesn't speak English, waiting for it to be interpreted and then trying to check it's been understood would take at least twice as long. Does the manager want to take all that time on one player? Might not be the only factor or the main factor. But for some managers it'll be a factor in their thinking as to whether to bring then on.

Reminds me of the old joke.

Manager walks into the changing room at half time to do the team talk. On the white board he draws a goal and a ball.

"See this" he says pointing to the goal and talking slowly "this is goal yes?"

He points to the ball. "And this is ball"

"Put...... ball........... in........... goal".

"Si si, I understand boss" says the Spanish centre forward.

"I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to the rest of them" says the manager.

How long has he been here? 5/6 months? Unless the lad is a complete dunce he should surely be picking up the language to a usable degree by now. Assuming he is trying if course. If he simply refuses to learn then that would be another issue to contemplate for the manager.

I did say at the time of wilders appointment that the first thing he would do is sacrifice payero. A real shame because I think Howson hasn't the legs for a full season.

Sometimes signings don’t work no matter how much you want them to. From what we’ve seen, he’s just not up to it. He may get better, but he’s not going to get enough chances to improve. Move on.

I think we need to be careful with equating "best players" with "best players who fit the system/role".

What is patently clear is that Wilder has a detailed blueprint for how he wants his teams to set up - formation, individual and collective roles. His starting 11 are the players he's identified at the club as best fitting into that style.

Of course players can be "trained" into a role and one would assume that's what is happening with Payero currently, although it's not always successful, the fact he's being kept around the squad suggests there's hope from the coaching staff that it will be successful though (contrast with Siliki).

I get the impression that Wilder would have a much more technically proficient player than Payero sat on the bench if they didn't fit with the style/system we're using.

You’ll find out what Wilder thinks of Payero when McGree returns, if he makes room for Payero on the bench still then I’d say he rates him.

Yes that’s what I said that bench is starting to get crowded will be interesting who makes way.

I think Wilder's main concern is that Payero won't press in the manner in which Howson, Tav and Crooks would. Wilder always talks about 'in and out of possession'. The fact we haven't seen Payero since he's taken over for me indicates that he doesn't think he fits into his system. Personally I think the lad deserves a chance to show what he can do. He was excellent at Cardiff away and it's not as if Tav/Howson are making the position their own, especially after their performances against Blackburn.

even when he had a couple of good games under Warnock, players did waltz past him when out of possession.

The football analysts on twitter said that Payeros success came from playing the high press at Banfield, not sure why he has struggled with it here, is the speed and physicality of the game proving a barrier for him? He clearly has abilities but sometimes it never clicks, hopefully it will and we will see him tearing it up
