Payero

I thought crooks was really poor last night. Not just the missed chances, but his overall play.

it was the same against reading too, but obviously the two late goals made up for it.

I’ve been a big fan of crooks, particularly his link up with Jones down the right, but he’s been below par recently

If Crooks has been below par recently, What does Par look like?? Because that would be an extremely high bar

His link up play yesterday with Jones in the second half was where we were getting success. He played a couple of lovely slide rule passes for Jones. Crooks is not a problem in this team

We don't have that player who can link the midfield with attack. Tav clearly isn't up to it on a regular basis and from the few games we have seen of him, I think Payero should be given that chance though assuming McGree will be the player who comes in. No skin off though, I reckon they probably thought it would take this season for Payero to get up to scratch and settle in. Next season could be his time to shine fingers crossed.

There how I see him as well.

The saving grace is that he’s at least on the bench “for now” but with our Aussie now on board and a fellow mf for how long that will last who knows.

Yeah you’re probably right. I’ve just noticed a lot of sloppy passes and touches from him last couple of games.

maybe he’s just a bit bloody knackered

He'll get his chance at some point.

Agreed with comments about Crooks being a nailed on starter, but hes on 8 cautions now, so another two at any time in the next 10 games will see him serve a 2 match ban

McNair and Peltier are also on 8, Jones 6 and Howson 5.

EDIT: Crooks is on 8, as his red at Reading was rescinded

8 isn’t it after last night but yes it’s only a matter of time.

I think the only player he could replace right now is Tav or he could [arguably] play in an advanced role-- Connolly.

It beggars belief that he didn't get on as a sub last night. He's our star player from Argentina! He was just looking really good then he got injured - fair play ease him back, but give him minutes ffs - especially with passengers like Connolly still on the pitch.

I'm beginning to think it's a Mendeita-type situation - five more appearances and we'll owe another million sort of thing. What other reason for not even giving him a chance in a game like that...?

Right now Wilder rates our present 3 in midfield ahead of Payero - look back at the press conference before the Reading game and he answers this and then goes on to say you don't leave your best players on the bench.

That's fair enough but it's slightly worrying that Payero isn't even getting an opportunity coming off the bench, especially when you consider he seemed the obvious player to bring on last night, with us chasing the game.

I know some have suggested it could be a language barrier but if that's the case, Wilder needs to be smart about it and use Leo as somebody who can communicate his instructions to Payero.

I hope it isn't an attitude issue, we've had this problem with South American players in the past.

I just find it strange that he's had no minutes on the pitch whatever since Wilder took over.

If it was an attitude problem I doubt he'd be on the bench at all.

"some have suggested it could be a language barrier"

You don't need to speak English to see a pass - or stick the ball in the goal. On the bench is one thing. Zero minutes another.

I dont think Wilder really uses subs much though apart from strikers. Payero would only get significant time from the bench for an injury.

No way he’s better than Crooks. Crooks will play every game.
In this league Crooks is way ahead when making a team selection.

I'd love to see Payero work out for us - definitely a quality player. But is he right for this team, in this league?

Only time will tell, but right now. No. Hopefully he gets a chance to stake a claim though with minutes from the bench at some point other wise we will never know. He probably should of been brought on yesterday at some point. Not necessarily for Crooks.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with Payero’s ability, but more that he hasn’t settled. Maybe he needs more time, maybe he needs a loan move back home for a few months or maybe it’s just not going to work.
