Just reading the report of this on the BBC website when I noticed this remark "Wycombe were relegated to the third tier last season, which may not have happened had a points deduction been imposed in 2020-21."

May not?

Keeping in mind that Wycombe finished one point behind Derby that season, what circumstances could the points deduction being made in that season have led to Wycombe still being relegated?

Depends when the deduction happened.

Rotherham were staying up ahead of both Derby and Wycombe until the 88th minute of the final match of the season, conceding an equaliser at the death.

Both teams could have went down even if Derby had rightly been deducted points.
