With more on the way. Over 100,000.

it does make you wonder what is the end game.

That’s true but we haven’t seen a show of force like this in a long time

Amid a buildup of an estimated 100,000 Russian troops near the border with Ukraine and massive joint war games with Belarus, the Defense Ministry said it will also conduct maneuvers involving the bulk of Russia’s naval potential.

“The drills are intended to practice navy and air force action to protect Russian national interests in the world’s oceans and to counter military threats to the Russian Federation,” the ministry said, adding that they will start this month and run through February.

It said the exercise will involve over 140 warships and more than 60 aircraft, and will be conducted in both littoral waters and more distant “operationally important” areas including the Mediterranean, northeastern Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean.

They've been there a while.
I wonder if with Biden distinguishing between an invasion and an incursion Russia will limit it to annexing the parts of Donetsk and Luhansk already held by Russian separatists - so Putin doesn't lose face

Well, since last April anyway…
I'd be more concerned with the influx of troops, vehicles, aircraft and equipment into Belarus than those built up on the border. Plus it's interesting how many US Navy ships left America earlier this week.

Look just because 100,000 troops are at the border it's not the EU's fault or the UK's or NATO's - it's Middlesbrough and Gibson's fault (and Wycombe's)

I wouldn't put it past this government and/or the ex Duke of York, to be using a made up 'Wag the Tail" type war as a diversionary tactic, but alas neither faction are as clever as Thatcher (attacking Argentina scrap metal dealers) and have no idea how to cover their tracks.

I'm just glad Trump no longer has his finger on the button, but I'm still not too happy about Bidon or Starmer offering any diplomatic assistance.

The CIA has been secretly training anti-Russian groups in Ukraine since 2015. Everything we know points to the likelihood that includes neo-Nazis inspiring far-right terrorists across the world.

The US government has a well-documented history of backing extremist groups as part of a panoply of foreign policy misadventures, which inevitably end up blowing up in the American public’s face. In the 1960s, the CIA worked with Cuban anti–Fidel Castro radicals who turned Miami into a hub of terrorist violence. In the 1980s, the agency supported and encouraged Islamic radicals converging in Afghanistan, who would go on to orchestrate the September 11 attack. And, in the 2010s, Washington backed Syria’s not-so-“moderate” rebels who ended up cutting a swath of atrocities through civilians and the Kurdish forces that were meant to be US allies.

Based on a new report, it looks like we may soon be able to add another to that list of fatally unlearned lessons: Ukrainian neo-Nazis.

".....It’s no small irony that the US president, elected in large part to halt the perceived march of fascism at home, is continuing long-standing US support for literal Nazis in what might well be the nexus of international fascism. And if these Ukrainian Nazis really are among the insurgents being trained by the CIA, it will be no small tragedy if they one day take the same career trajectory as Osama bin Laden."

Oh the Americans have made a right old mess of Ukraine and our relationship with Russia. They reneged on a "gentleman's agreement" on the expansion of NATO when the Soviet Union collapsed. Hence why Ukraine is the line in the sand for Russia on expansion of NATO.

Putin has always found that he has "got away" with being confrontational. He is prepared to go further than a democratically elected leader would or could. That said,

1. If he was going to invade Ukraine he doesn't need any more troops than are already there
2. The West has been supplying the Ukraine with antitank and antiair missiles and training in how to use them, there would be a LOT of dead Russians if he goes
3. Biden and the West will punish Russia economically, for such a huge country their GDP is comparable to Spain and most of the wealth is in the hands of Oligarchs who he needs on his side.

I think it is bluff. Not sure I'd have the guts to call it but...

Belarus is pretty much a part of Russia as things stand. Lukashenko alienated Europe and the west and ran into Putin’s arms, after previously playing them off against each other. He’s little more than a puppet now.

Whilst I agree with most of your post, the “gentleman’s agreement” is a myth the Russians continue to peddle… and even if it wasn’t, the Americans aren’t the sole power in NATO and couldn’t give those guarantees. I would also suggest it’s the Russians that have messed relations with us and the Ukrainians… there’s a reason anti-Russian sentiment is on the rise in formerly friendly nations and it’s not down to the perfidious west, Belarus used to be pretty pro-Russia but not anymore and many Kazakhs are sure they’ve sold their soul to Putin.

Also, it’s not just about invading Ukraine, the Russians would surely win if that were the sole objective. They may have to hold some very hostile territory and war, along with the high casualties you mention, will not play well here in Russia.

Exactly mate

Are these 100,000 troops socially distanced. I wonder what would happen if they caught Omnicrom ?
I expect a fair number will have caught Omicron, been asymptomatic or experienced mild symptoms for a few days.

Omicron is not going to stop an army.
