Rangers defender Jack Simpson wanted by Middlesbrough [Ibrox News]

Everton have just spent £17m on a defender who wasn't good enough for Rangers, football is littered with players that don't fit a playing style, undergo a loss of form, or just need a change of scenery, look at what Spence is doing at Forest and there will have been fans in Nottingham saying how good can he be if he can't get into, at the time, a lower mid table Middlesbrough side ?

Managers have different ideas on the game and players respond differently to methods and techniques, if Wilder sees Simpson as one who can do a job for us and the deal is right for all parties then I don't see a downside, it's not like we're looking at spending significant money on an ageing player with no sell on, we're possibly taking a look at a player on loan who might be a diamond in the rough. Look at how many games Tyrone Mings played for Bournemouth in his 4 year spell there that overlapped with Simpson.

Not sure about filling the squad with loan players, its another full rebuild next summer if we dont get promoted and dont sign any of them

Spot on(y)
Humans respond differently in similar circumstances: some respond to an arm on the shoulder, others respond to a kick up the arz!
I agree entirely with what you say: just look at the players under Wilder and how they were performing under Warnock.
People Management is an art and a skill - Wilder clearly has both and doing an amazing job in transforming the club(y)⚽

Feel we should be targeting a RWB and DM before bringing in another CB. We haven't been linked with any so far during this window.

Surely we have enough cover at CB with Bamba and Peltier, and Wood may not end up going out on loan.

Wood can only go on loan back to Hibs as he's played for us before and after his loan.

I suppose you need to consider what Wilder deems as what he is wanting from a CB. I think he is happy with Fry, Dijksteel and McNair starting.

He seems happy with Bamba as the 'sitting' CB for a rotation option (maybe not after the weekend) but not Hall it seems.

Wood looks a long way off from his last outing. So if he wants two for each of the three births, a specialist left footed left side CB who is comfortable on the ball would probably be someone he'd be interested in.

Central Fry with Bamba as Cover

Right Dijksteel or McNair, Peltier as cover

Left McNair with Peltier as cover

Hall seems to be out of the running?

So one more wouldn't hurt, Bamba and Peltier are in the last 5 months of their contracts as well aren't they?

Yeah, I suppose this lad being a left-footer has probably been a big factor. He will probably be hoping he'll be effective as an overlapping CB down the left side.

Bamba and Peltier are in the last 5 months of their contracts, maybe Wilder is wanting to take a look at this lad and may see him as a long-term option and make a bid if he does well.

I just hope as I've said that we're looking to bring in a RWB and DM. If Jones and Howson pick up injuries which keep them out for a lengthy time we could be in trouble. I know McNair can fill in at DM if needed but I'd prefer for us to sign a natural DM still.

Bamba is a liability in defence the way Wilder plays. He’s to slow and completely messes up our defensive line. Hall similar to Bamba doesn’t have the legs. Peltier is okay as despite being old hes still got legs but isn’t ideal and can’t play in the same back 3 as dijksteel as it exposes us with a lack of height for set pieces.Wood isn’t ready yet. It means we literally have no decent cover that can step in

The lack of an actual left footed CB is very evident. Especially when you see Big Sol trying to shift it onto his preferred foot under pressure.

I genuinely thought we'd go for Basham. A Left footer who's very comfortable on the ball and part of the Wilder ball CBs. That said he's 32 and entering his final 6 months.

He’s right footed, it’s Jack O’Connell was left footed . He’s had his injury problems though

Woody is 20 in a few months - its a concern that he is never "ready" - Wilder made the point that he has to prove he is as good as he thinks he is.
Hes older than Josh Coburn and less than two years younger than Jonesy.
The latter has appeared from non-league, whereas Woody has been in the Boro bubble for a lot longer.
Spence is 21 - look how well he is doing.
Woody needs to vacate the shirt.

How do you vacate a shirt you've not worn in consecutive matches?
I was not at Mansfield and saw only limited highlights.
It seems he didn't play well in a team that broadly didn't play well.
I am mystified why some people seem to want to write the lad off.
I certainly don't.

The issue I raise relates to his "promise" which has been "apparent" for at least two seasons or more.
Wilder`s assertion that players have to prove their worth was made after a question from a journalist.
I thought he played OK at Mansfield by the way.
The question is how many chances do you give any young player before they move on?
Every year players are released and move on to other clubs.
I didnt see much tract about Tyrone O`Neil when he was moved on?
Woody is a decent lad, but no one has a right to keep the shirt until they are "ready". [ A favourite term used by Warnock ]
We`ve seen other young players overtake him, and Tyrone and Wingy and Coulson - because they have what is required.
I hope he sorts himself out by the summer. (y)

I agree Roofie, I haven’t seen this special player we here about so often. As you say hope he sorts himself out and gets a loan move next season that puts him on the right path, another season of not playing first team football next season could be hugely detrimental. He needs to play

I certainly don't wish the lad to fail, quite the opposite as with any boro player. However I dont feel encouraged by comments like he has to prove he is as good as he thinks he is, which I've read on here (although I'm not sure how accurate that quote is). Sounds like a kid getting a bit ahead of himself and that doesn't often end up working out well. He obviously has talent to be captaining England at junior levels but then again we had exactly the same thing with josh walker many years ago and he never ended up being the star he was touted as at the time. Time will tell, I hope he proves his doubters wrong.

He did play the ball for Uche's breakaway goal (he has an assist) and has shown this capability a lot in his brief showings.
I hope he stays a Boro player. If that means he goes out on loan next season so be it, but players can start new seasons like a train.
Nathan is 19. He is five years younger than Fry. Five years ago, Fry had played 9 games of professional football. Many then wrote the lad off, yet now he is touted as a really key player. He properly broke into the side when he was 21.

There seems to be a desire in some - like those jumping all over him on saturday - to want to write him off. I seriously don't get it

It’s just an opinion mate. You have your own on players I have mine on Wood. Like I said the other day, I hope I am wrong but I’m not convinced I will be. I don’t see him becoming a mainstay at the Boro. You know me though, if I am wrong there will be no backtracking I will hold my hands up. Next season is huge for him in my opinion.
