Middlesbrough centre experience.

It's awful. Last time i was there about 3 months there was two scumbags fighting outside of McDonald's at around 1 in the afternoon. I won't be visiting again. Ever.

It's been like that for at least 15 years now.
Those who live outside of Middlesbrough can see it more obviously than those who live in it.
Agreed with this, when I lived in Boro I never really looked at it twice, but since moving away it’s blindingly obvious how ran down and awful it is. Try to avoid the town centre like the plague.

Tory Britain. You can't say we weren't warned.
People’s lack of respect and regard for others transcends politics, it’s been a slow social decline for forty years,I come from a slum era background and council estate but would not be allowed to behave the way some do now. It’s just the way society is now, the entitled attitude is the pervading one. There are no excuses for bad manners and ignorant behaviour but people don’t know any better because they’ve never been taught the difference.

Aye , since the hag Thatcher turned up and declared there was “No such thing as SOCIETY”!!

No time for the woman but don’t blame any politician for personal responsibility, What I’ve learned over the years is the world owes no one a living, We should take care of the vulnerable, the sick and the elderly, the rest of us take our chances. Manners cost nothing.

Forty years is about right. The time the country rejected the post war march towards a more civilised nation and chose Thatcher and neo Liberalism.

Tory Britain.

What has that got to do with personal responsibility, don’t make political capital out of bad behaviour and poor or nonparenting. You could give some people a grand a week and they’d still behave the same way. I lived through the thatchers years, her election was my first vote, it didn’t make me rude, loutish and thick. Do you think the working class have to be spoon fed.

The centre of Middlesbrough has also suffered from online shopping, so many decent shops have shut or gone down market like House of Fraser, Psyche, Debenhams, BHS, which means the profile of people using the centre has changed too. Drugs seem much more common. The Boro was always rough, with a higher than average number of prostitutes, street fights, drunken behaviour, but it was mostly after 7pm. If Mrs W come with me, I send her to MIMA while I am at the match. She used to go to House of Fraser and M&S, but she does not feel as safe as she did in the Town Centre.

When in town I always comment that Middlesbrough's finest are out in force today.

Lots of issues at play here:

Mental health
Immigration
Substance abuse
Homelessness

I wouldn't know where to start to put all of that right. Money would help.
Vote Tory
Get the country you deserve 👍👍🙈

Went into middlesbrough on bank holiday monday for the UB40 gig. First time i have been into the town centre for about 2 years. dear god, never again.

The contrast between that experience and the previous weekend at scarborough for an outside gig was extreme.

It’s tragic and awful how a sub-culture of society has been allowed to propagate over the years, stop thinking that their behaviour is a choice, addicts don’t have choices once the addiction has taken hold and personal responsibility for those people doesn’t exist, resources have been reduced, facilities closed, support mechanisms reduced, these people are ill and need proper help not universal condemnation and judgement, their right to vote will soon be removed too, which further casts them a drift from ‘normalisation’.

This isn’t a problem restricted to just Middlesbrough but throughout the country and, in part, is a direct result of policies over the last decade that have seen a reliance on charity over fully cogent and coherent support, funding would have made a difference but quite often it’s the symptom and not the cause that is attacked which never fully cures the problem and sees relapse for this being treat and eventual collapse of the organisation due to continued failure.

You were unlucky, time and place.Happens in any town centre. Middlesbrough is no different to any other place
I think Middlesbrough is worse for this sort of thing than many towns around the country. It's the sort of thing that help the town cement it's place in the top ten of all those bad league tables!

I stay in Niort overnight when travelling to the Atlantic Coast region of France and this town has similar problems. Niort is a beautiful French town that is classed as part of the French green Venice region. I must have stayed in this town on several occasions and on each time we have to pass a large group of homeless vagrants. This is usually around 8 pm and their drug of choice as well and truly kicked in, with them screaming and shouting at each other.

What I am getting at here, is this is not just an issue in Middlesbrough or any other major town or city in Britain, it is a worldwide issue. How to tackle it is the million dollar question.
